To reach their potential in future cybersecurity careers, students need not only an array of technical skills but also “soft skills” that will enable them to work effectively in teams and in real-world situations.

California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB) has worked with national intelligence agencies, federal agencies, private corporations, and other universities in developing its graduate programs in cybersecurity and national security. These employers emphasize that one of their major concerns is that tomorrow’s cybersecurity pros be ready to communicate clearly, critically evaluate evidence, and analyze the strengths and weaknesses of different possible conclusions.

This webinar series by CSUSB adjunct instructor Anastacia Webster will explore ways you can help cybersecurity and IT students develop these essential soft skills:

  • Clear written communication, particularly communicating technical information to non-technical analysts and decision-makers
  • Creative thinking techniques that help analysts avoid getting trapped in their own mindsets and misinterpreting information
  • Structured analytical techniques for reaching more accurate assessments and estimates

Ms. Webster will discuss how, by partnering with the university’s political science department and other departments, CSUSB has expanded the range of cybersecurity education it can offer students. The templates and resources she provides will be especially relevant for academic institutions building degree programs in the fields of cybersecurity and security, but the broader discussion about cross-pollination between technical and nontechnical subjects will be of interest also to instructors teaching in secondary education and at the college level.
