SUMMARY:Faculty Workshop in Stem Cell Technologies
DTSTAMP:20160315T121517
DESCRIPTION:Goal: The goal of the hands-on workshop is to equip faculty wit
h tools to introduce mouse and/or human stem cell technologies into the cla
ssroom and laboratory. Participants should already have a cell culture faci
lity and cell culture curriculum at their institution. Participants will le
 arn stem cell techniques including:
\n
\n
\n	Aseptic techniques
\n	Routine
maintenance and culturing of stem cells
\n	Light and epifluorescence micros
 copy
\n	PCR-based gene expression profiling for germ layer analysis
\n	Meth
ods for directed differentiation from pluripotent cultures
\n	Emerging tech
nologies including genomic editing in stem cells
\n
\n
\nReducing Costs to
Make Stem Cell Courses Practical: The cost of specialized media and the pur
chase of specific growth factors and reagents is a major barrier to introdu
cing hands-on stem cell instruction. To address this issue\, participants w
ill learn how to make expensive items in their own lab. Participants will h
ave the opportunity to create plasmid expression constructs for key signali
ng factors\, including FGF and LIF\, which are often cost-prohibitive compo
nents in specialized Stem Cell media. Techniques for factor expression and
 purification will be covered.
\n
\nInstructional Materials: Participants wi
ll receive a comprehensive Stem Cell Manual with industry-supported protoco
ls and prepared lectures. Participants will also have the opportunity to in
teract with industry and academic experts who are at the forefront of disco
very and innovation in this very rapidly evolving field.
\n
\nLogistics: Lo
dging at the Madison Crowne Plaza Hotel for Sunday-Thursday nights and loca
l shuttle service will be provided at no cost to participants. Breakfasts a
nd lunches are also included. Participants who are not local to Wisconsin w
ill receive a $500 stipend that can be used for airfare\, dinners\, and oth
er travel expenses. Local participants will receive a $200 stipend that can
be used for expenses. Participants are responsible for making their own tr
avel arrangements. Please plan to stay until 1:00 on Friday\, if possible.

 \n
\nRSVP Required: A limited number of spaces are available on a first-com
e\, first-served basis to faculty at institutions that have the facilities
to work with stem cells. Feel free to contact Dr. Tom Tubon directly with a
ny questions that may arise regarding this opportunity (tubon@madisoncolleg
 e.edu\, 608 246-6875).
