SUMMARY:Climate Change Resilience and Governance
DTSTAMP:20140507T111709
DESCRIPTION:This two-day summit is for government officials and staff\, civ
 il society\, community\, corporate\, and thought leaders\, journalists\, an
d others interested in the governance issues raised by climate change resil
ience.Come if you work on climate issues and want to engage more on governa
nce. Come if you work on and want to better understand the tensions climate
  change may increase.
\n
\nWhy participate?
\n
\nTo contribute to the conve
rsation and deepen understanding of the governance challenges posed by clim
ate change preparedness and resilience and to discuss ways to move forward.

\n
\nWill the summit have a lasting impact?
\n
\nYes! This summit will mak
e governance issues more prominent and increase the nuances in ongoing clim
ate resilience discussions. The summit will bring people together to connec
t and work. Organizers will support ongoing conversations and follow-up act
 ivities.
\n
\nWhat is Governance?
\n
\nThe United Nations Development Progr
amme has said governance is "the exercise of economic\, political and admin
istrative authority to manage a country’s affairs at all levels. It compr
ises mechanisms\, processes and institutions through which citizens and gro
ups articulate their interests\, exercise their legal rights\, meet their o
bligations and mediate their differences" (Governance for Sustainable Human
  Development\, 1997).
\n
\n
\n
\nIssues of governance—how collective dec
 isions are made\, interpreted\, implemented\, and challenged—will enable
or impede activities to increase resilience. Governance in the context of r
 esilience raises important questions:
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n	Who decides what resi
 lience actions are taken?
\n	How are conflicts resolved?
\n	What creative s
teps are communities taking and what barriers are they encountering? how ca
 n people change them?
\n	Could a less centralized governance system work be
 tter in some cases?
\n	Where and how does governance happen outside “the
 state”?
\n	How can governmental organizations be more effective?
\n
