hosting a free conference for Washington State faculty in the life sciences.

This conference explores multiple models of Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs), best practices, assessment tools and strategies to broaden participation in undergraduate research. This conference highlights some of the most successful CUREs currently being taught at WA community colleges. Faculty will walk away with contacts, curricular resources, and innovative ideas about how to incorporate research into their existing courses.

Conference Highlights

Optional Pre-conference Workshop: September 9

Learn how to transform the traditional microbiology course (e.g. counting, staining and biochemical testing) into a multi-week course-based undergraduate research project by incorporating bacterial 16S rRNA sequencing.

 

Presentations and roundtable discussions on:

  • Course-based research projects you can use in your classes
    • Successful models for 100 & 200 level science courses: environmental science, introductory biology, microbiology, and cellular biology
  • Best practices for integrating research into existing courses
  • Assessment of student learning outcomes from course-based research
  • Strategies for using course-based research to close achievement gaps and promote equity

James Hewlett, Executive Director of the Community College Undergraduate Research Initiative (CCURI), a national network of 44 institutions that are incorporating research into community college curricula.
