What IS biotechnology? The Biotechnology Innovation Organization, or BIO, states that "biotechnology harnesses cellular and biomolecular processes to develop technologies and products that help improve our lives and the health of our planet." Using this definition, applications for biotechnology are broad from agriculture to medicine, energy production, chemical processing, industrial manufacturing, and bioremediation (or environmental clean-up).

Get Ready to Make a Difference
The Biotechnology program at Los Angeles Mission College prepares students for entry-level work in exciting biotechnology industries, such as:
- Agricultural Feedstock and Chemicals
- Drugs and Pharmaceuticals
- Medical Devices and Equipment
- Research Testing and Medical Laboratories
- Bioscience-related Distribution
During the program, you will get hands-on work experience in biotechnology, which harnesses cellular and biomolecular processes to develop technologies and products that help save lives and improve the health of the planet.
Upon successful completion of the required coursework, students will have acquired skills in basic laboratory techniques, safety, documentation, and good manufacturing practices.

What can I do with a major in Biotechnology?
The biotechnology sector is a quickly evolving industry. According to Life Sciences & Biotech Middle Skills Workforce in California (2014) "The life sciences/biotechnology sector is best understood as a group of diverse industries with a common link--the application of biological scientific knowledge. Biotechnology harnesses cellular and biomolecular processes to develop technologies and products that combat debilitating and rare diseases, reduce our environmental footprint, feed the hungry, use less and cleaner energy, and have safer, cleaner and more efficient industrial manufacturing processes. The sector represents a mix of five industry sub-sectors: -Agricultural Feedstock & Chemicals, -Drugs & Pharmaceuticals, -Medical Devices & Equipment, -Research Testing & Medical Laboratories, and -Bioscience-related Distribution."
