Nanotechnology Workshop Offerings
Thanks to NSF grant DUE-2000725, NACK offers two types of free, live-streaming workshops. Whether you need introductory information to the world of nano, are ready to implement nano-concepts into your classroom, or are interested in implementing a full nanotechnology program at your institution, these are great cutting-edge knowledge, professional development opportunities at no cost to you!

The leadership team involved in developing and redesigning the structure of the 2021 workshop offerings include: Mariel Kolker (Morristown High School, NJ), Peter Kazarinoff (Portland Community College), Anthony Dalessio (SUNY Erie Community College), Wesley Sanders (Salt Lake Community College), Jared Ashcroft (Pasadena City College), Ozgur Cakmak (Grand Valley State University), Terry Kuzma (Penn State), Osama Awadelkarim (Penn State), Renee Lindenberg (Penn State) and Bob Ehrmann (Penn State).

Introduction to Nanotechnology for Educators Workshop

How small is a nanometer? What makes nanotechnology so special, interesting, and unique? How is nanotechnology impacting us today and into the future? How do we see what we cannot see? How do we make things at the nanoscale? What education and career paths are available in nanotechnology? Learn the answers to these questions and more at our Intro to Nanotechnology for Educators Workshop.

Nanotechnology is at the frontier of chemistry, biology, biophysics, materials science, engineering ... just about any STEM discipline. Our everyday lives are being affected by the nano-world, including health, electronics, building materials, household products, alternative energy, and even fashion.

Join us for six consecutive Fridays from January 28 - March 4th, 2022 from noon to 2:00 pm ET as we:
  • Gain a basic understanding of nanotechnology.
  • Deepen our understanding of current nanoscience research.
  • Learn about opportunities and pathways for your students.
  • Discover phenomena at the nanoscale, which includes activities and content that can be used to create NGSS-aligned lessons or workforce development programming.

Courtesy of the National Science Foundation, these free, virtual workshop sessions will be conducted via Zoom, with a treasure trove of additional materials and resources provided through Penn State's course management system. Certificates of Completion will be provided upon request at conclusion of the workshop. An asynchronous option will be available for those who are interested but cannot commit to the set schedule.

Hands-on-Site Experience

Would you like the chance to see how a teaching cleanroom is set up? How about using some characterization or fabrication tools hands-on? This summer, three sites will be opening their doors to qualified participants who have attended a NACK Intro to Nano workshop, and one or more of the follow-up workshops (2022’s Integrating Nano Working Groups, 2021’s Nano-Educator’s Topical Seminar Series, or 2018-2020’s Nano Curriculum Materials Workshops).

These multi-day workshops are designed to give the participants actual experience within a cleanroom, and further understand the laboratory experience that NACK partners are using within their nanotechnology workforce programs. Ultimately, these experiences should lead to implementation of nanotechnology classroom exercises, nanotechnology courses, or perhaps a nanotechnology workforce program at their home institution.

Dates:

  • Salt Lake Community College, Salt Lake City, UT – June 13 – 15
  • SUNY Erie Community College, Williamsville, NY – July 11 – 13
  • NACK, Penn State University, State College, PA – August 8-10

Implementing Nano Working Groups (INWG)

You may have attended workshops, webinars, community groups, and conferences pertaining to nanotechnology. You have a ton of great ideas to add to your curriculum, start a program, etc., but you either have no idea where to start or haven’t had the time. NACK is offering a series of four Implementing Nano Working Group (INWG) sessions designed to help you cultivate your ideas or implement readily available, nanotechnology-based resources, facilitated by experienced nanotechnology educators from across the country. By the end of the sessions, you will have developed your personal plan for nano integration for your setting. Sessions will begin after March 15. Exact dates and times will be determined once groups are defined.

All participants are welcome, but only US high school and undergraduate institution educators, with prior Intro to Nano knowledge or equivalent, will be considered for a series of performance-based stipends. $250 will be awarded to qualifying participants who complete the four sessions of the working group, along with submitting an implementation plan to the INWG leaders for review. An additional $500 will be awarded to those participants who submit their lesson plan, program, etc. proposal to their institution’s approval process and provide proof* of that submission, or who implement their plan with proof* of that implementation. Implementation plans may include a single lesson plan, a course proposal, or a program change (more options may be discussed during INWG sessions).

*Acceptable means of “proof” will be discussed and determined with each participant.
