Through funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), partner institutions in the University of Arkansas system are offering Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) approved professional development during summer 2019. Participants will earn up to 18 PD hours in ADE FOCUS area 8.02.9 (Next generation learning/integrated technology) with a focus on applied geospatial technologies in the classroom to enhance curriculum content and reinforce student learning.

These trainings are FREE. A limited number of stipends will be offered at each location for K-12 educators, as well as scholarships for community college students. Lunch, light snacks, and bottled water are provided to all participants.

Licensed K12 Educators: For each offering there are 10 stipend slots available for licensed K12 Educators. To be eligible for a stipend you must be able to attend all days of training during the times specified, be a licensed K-12 educator, complete all necessary paperwork by the deadline, and agree to submit an outline of a class exercise that you plan to integrate using the technologies you have learned during training.

Scholarships for Community College Students: This year we will offer 10 scholarships for community college students who would like to attend summer training to learn more about location-based technologies.

To be eligible to receive this scholarship you must: be able to attend all days of training during the times specified, have a faculty member from your home institution provide a letter of recommendation, and complete all necessary paperwork by the deadline.

Student applications should be submitted no later than April 12, 2019 using the online form.
Faculty members should upload recommendation letters no later than April 19, 2019.
Students will be notified of selection the week of April 29, 2019 with instructions for registration and required paperwork.

Other OPENGATE Partners: For each offering there are 5 non-stipend slots available to OPENGATE partners. OPENGATE partner slots are available to interested members of the community, industry-affiliates, or others who will not qualify for a stipend or do not wish to receive a stipend.


Getting Started with Spatial Data Hands-On Seminar, 3-day (Daily, 8:30am - 4:30pm)

  • Introduction to spatial technologies concepts

  • How to take advantage of existing resources to enhance your classroom

  • Types of data, how to find them, and how to use them in GIS

  • Using basic analysis functions to encourage critical thinking

  • Building and sharing interactive maps and mapping applications

  • Introduction to creating and collecting data


As an NSF-funded workshop participant you will be asked to provide feedback about the seminar itself and the use of created materials in the classroom environment. Stipends for participants are available on a limited basis. Professional development hours are applicable for educators, any individual holding a license issued by the State Board of Education, specifically including without limitation teachers, administrators, library media specialists, and counselors.
