Held each fall in a different port city, AAPA’s Annual Convention continues to be the largest membership meeting of the year.  The 2016 Convention in New Orleans will represent the 105th in AAPA’s history.  It includes technical and policy committee meetings, as well as business sessions and social networking events for port professionals and others in the marine transportation industry.  Attendees will enjoy unique programming and networking throughout the day, followed by one-of-a-kind evening events in the vibrant city of New Orleans.

Presenter - Dr. Barry Gump is the first holder of the Harvey R. Chaplin Eminent Scholar’s Chair in Beverage Management at Florida International University’s Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. In this position he is developing new graduate and undergraduate beverage classes to expand the offerings of the Beverage Management curriculum. Dr. Gump is Emeritus Professor of Chemistry and Emeritus Adjunct Professor of Enology at California State University, Fresno. He has had a long association (over thirty years) with the wine industry, conducting research in analytical methodology applied to grapes, juices, and wines.

The American Association of Community Colleges, with the support of the National Science Foundation, holds the annual ATE Principal Investigators Conference in Washington, DC. The conference brings together approximately 850 people to focus on the critical issues related to advanced technological education. Key people working on ATE projects across the country participate in the conference. Conference attendees represent community colleges, business and industry, secondary school systems, four-year colleges, and research and development centers covering projects in a wide variety of areas such as information technology, engineering technology, micro- and nanotechnologies, chemical technology, and biotechnology.

Trumpf and the Midwest Photonics Education Center of Indian Hills Community College have partnered to offer this Lasers in Manufacturing Symposium.  It is designed for industry professionals and students interested in learning about laser systems considerations and applications in a variety of industries as well as advances in additive manufacturing with 3D metal printing.  A live demonstration of a Trumpf TruLaser Station 5005 laser welder and a tour of the IHCC Laser & Optics laboratory will be included.

Spend a day visiting the NIH campus and learning about careers and training opportunities in the biomedical and health care fields.  The day will consist of career panel discussions, science seminars, a keynote address from the Director, Sharon Milgram, the popular networking luncheon event, faculty breakout sessions and of course the NIH Community College Summer Enrichment program will be highlighted.  This year there are additional panel discussions AND the NIH Postdoctoral Fellow/Community College Faculty meet & greet has been brought back!

This workshop will introduce ATE community members to the Raspberry Pi, an inexpensive credit-card- sized computer that can do amazing things. Participants will learn how to hook-up, turn on, and program the Raspberry Pi to take pictures and detect real-world signals such as motion, temperature, and pressure. The workshop will culminate with a hands-on project in which participants make a burglar alarm system by programming the Raspberry Pi to turn on a camera and record a video when motion is detected.

This event features thought leaders from education, government, industry, and non-profits who are addressing the cybersecurity education, training, and workforce needs of the nation. It is supported by the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE), a program of the National Institute of Standards and Technology in the U.S. Department of Commerce. The two-day event includes face-to-face convening of public-private partners; an opportunity to signal NICE strategic directions and priorities; and a forum to showcase best practices.

Cybersecurity has emerged as one of the leading creators of jobs and opportunity for all economic sectors. The demand for cybersecurity positions in both the public and private sector is large and growing, but the talent pool of cybersecurity workers is not yet able to keep up. The annual Massachusetts STEM Summit promotes Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education and workforce development from early childhood through adulthood. Now in its 13th year, the Summit convenes the state’s educators, business leaders, policymakers, parents, students, and others to share strategies, initiatives, collaborations, and ideas. For the 2016 Summit, the focus will be on “Building a Lifetime of Opportunity”. The stimulation and nurturing of curiosity and enthusiasm for STEM can begin in the earliest years of life and then be built upon and sustained over the course of a lifetime

ATE community members are invited to Governor Mary Fallin’s third annual STEM Summit, a forum that brings together Oklahoma business leaders, educators and other key stakeholders focused on the critical importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in our communities.

The purpose of this workshop is to introduce cutting edge technologies of lasers and fiber optics & their applications in the advanced manufacturing industries to college instructors. 

This 6-hour workshop covers basic and advanced topics of light, lasers, and fiber optics as well as the latest high-power systems currently used in automotive, aircraft, & other advanced manufacturing industries. 

Participants will learn how laser light is generated and used in manufacturing applications, the applications of lasers in welding, drilling, brazing, cladding, marking, etching, and additive manufacturing, and the ability to identify safety equipment and accessories required to protect personnel from laser radiation. 

College instructors teaching industrial electronics, electricity, automated manufacturing, electrical and electronics engineering, industrial automation, automotive, and welding courses should attend this event. Each participant receives a free Light and Optics Exploration kit valued at $100.

The biotechnology industry has grown substantially in the past 14 years and become a major contributor to the U.S. economy. Numerous job opportunities have accompanied this growth, especially for entry-level workers with specialized certificates or a two-year biotech degree. In some cases, a high-school diploma may suffice. Bio-Link, an Advanced Technology Education Center of Excellence, funded by the National Science Foundation, developed in response to educators’ need to identify biotech-related skills and create curriculum to meet that demand. As a community, Bio-Link works to share best practices in biotech education and partner with industry to ensure that the education students receive leads to opportunities for employment and career growth. This presentation will discuss the benefits and resources, like Biotech-Careers.org(link is external), that Bio-Link can offer educators in all areas of life science. New trends in biotechnology education, such as stem cell technology, genome engineering with CRISPR/Cas9, interactive movies, bioinformatics, biomanufacturing, a set of validated skill standards, the Bio-Link curriculum clearinghouse, and the establishment of school-based organizations for on-site internships and contract research will be described.

The AAAS Leadership Seminar in Science and Technology Policy is a "crash course" in science and technology (S&T) policy, designed for those who need to know how S&T policy works.

It is modeled after the highly acclaimed orientation program that AAAS provides for its new S&T Policy Fellows, but distills the key material into 5 days instead of two weeks. Space is limited to only 30 to 35 participants--the small group setting provides an ideal opportunity to learn about the challenges and solutions of S&T policy from the experts.

The New York Geographic Alliance is pleased to announce that our annual celebration of Geography, GeoFest 2016, will return to Monroe Community College on Saturday November 19, 2016. This event will include three workshop sessions, and introductory breakfast session, and an optional afternoon event. Our partner for GeoFest is the MCC Department of Chemistry/Geosciences. Our theme is The Power of Parks... and Geography! 

Innovations in “legacy sectors” of the economy – fossil fuels, manufacturing, buildings, transport, agriculture, the inter-state electric grid, health services delivery, higher education, and many others – are essential if we are to address major societal challenges like climate change, inequality, unemployment, competitiveness, and cybersecurity. Innovation in information technology, biotech, nanotech, and other frontier sectors won’t solve these long-standing problems in the absence of policy measures to overcome the obstacles that block innovation in legacy sectors. Yet we tend to focus innovation on frontiers, and are not good at bringing it to our legacy sectors. Charles Weiss and William B.
