This workshop is intended for those who are teaching students who plan to become engineers, physical scientists or technicians in technology-related industries. Recent microcomputer-based laboratory (MBL) and computational tools coupled with an activity-based physics approach provides a better method of teaching physics to these future professionals by enabling the teaching/learning process to build on students’ direct experiences in the physics classroom/laboratory or studio.
This workshop will show participants how they can introduce computation into their introductory courses. Participants will engage in a hands-on introduction to computational modeling in the Vpython programming language and learn to develop their own exercises and student projects. A framework for computational projects will be demonstrated along with several example projects, and a discussion of how computational modeling can be implemented in a Two Year College environment.
There will also be an opportunity to share and discuss issues relating to implementation and to teaching physics more effectively. There will be extensive discussions on how to use various strategies, tools, and tactics to overcome problems and barriers. Discussion and information on the needs of the technological workforce and its connection with the activities of this workshop will also be presented. The workshop leaders have years of experience in developing and refining curriculum for introductory physics students.
The local host will be Kent Reinhard who has implemented MBL and LabVIEW into his physics program at Southeast Community College.

National AFV Day Odyssey is a nationwide, biennial event with the mission of educating the public about alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles and the important role these vehicles play in providing solutions to our nation’s growing energy security and environmental issues.
This workshop covers the applications, design, and operation of MEMS pressure sensors. Participants will construct a macro-size model of a MEMS pressure sensor using a paint can for the substrate and sensor’s reference chamber, a balloon for the sensor’s diaphragm, and a mixture of graphite and rubber cement for the sensing circuit. After learning about the Wheatstone bridge as a sensing circuit, participants will apply this knowledge to an analysis of their pressure sensor model. Workshop discussions will include where and how this material and the related activities can be incorporated into an existing curriculum.

AVS has conducted a two-day in-service workshop on low-pressure experiments and modeling for middle and high school science teachers from the United States and Canada since 1990. Attendees are sponsored by regional Chapters of the Society with all expenses paid by the sponsoring Chapter. The workshop is accredited for CEU's and is aligned with the national science and mathematics standards.
The workshop is divided into two parts: (1) lectures on the underlying science and the mathematical calculations and (2) hands-on experience in which a group of teachers perform experiments and develop models under the guidance of an instructor team.
The focus of this summit will be on educating students and others on secure programming. Summit objectives are threefold:
To engage approximately 60 cyber security stakeholders from 3 groups (academia, government and industry, and certification and training) in a comprehensive dialogue about the current state of education in secure software.
To use this dialogue to collaboratively develop creative approaches to teach secure programming, and to enhance the quality of existing education in this area; and to outline a comprehensive agenda for education in secure programming.

The national FFA convention is held each October with nearly 55,000 FFA members and guests from across the country in attendance. Members participate in general sessions, competitive events, educational tours, leadership workshops, a career show and expo, volunteer activities and much more. It is one of the largest annual student conventions in the country.
National Community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS) is a pilot program funded by NASA's Exploration Systems Mission Directorate (ESMD) and administered by NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC). Community college students from across the nation who are interested in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics will apply to travel to NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) for a 3 day experience. This opportunity will provide a hands-on project featuring engineering career possibilities. Selected students will begin the semester commitment with Web-based preparation prior to visiting JSC. The 3 day experience at JSC will allow participants to:
Participate in team project directed by NASA engineers
Attend engineer, scientist and astronaut briefings
Tour NASA JSC facilities
Interact with students from across the United States
An intellectual merit criterion for the ATE program is that the grant-level evaluations should provide useful information to the project and others. This workshop is designed for PI-evaluator teams seeking to enhance the usefulness of their evaluations while keeping them practical and cost-effective. Evalua|t|e staff will facilitate hands-on activities in which participants clarify and solidify evaluation work plans and deliverables; establish or refine a logic model for their projects and use it to identify success indicators and performance standards; determine reporting needs, formats, and time lines; and identify strategies to develop, improve, and maintain productive working relationships between project evaluation staff. In addition, NSF program officers will present their expectations for evaluations of ATE grants. Other ATE PIs and evaluators will share best evaluation practices that participants can adopt to support project improvement. ATE PIs are encouraged to bring their evaluators to this session, along with project/evaluation planning materials, such as a project logic models, goals/objectives, and evaluation plans.

This funding is intended to enable participation by evaluators who might not otherwise be able to attend. It is mandatory that funding recipients register and participate in the preconference workshop “Designing Practical and Useful Evaluations.” This Evalua|t|e-led workshop is designed for PI-evaluator teams seeking to enhance the usefulness of their evaluations while keeping them practical and cost-effective.
