More solar opportunities and economic development around solar in North Carolina! ☀️ #SolarForAll #SolarEnergy #CleanEnergy #HitTheTarget #WorkforceDevelopment
"We should always look for ways to change how we do energy to be more beneficial for our environment and the planet as a whole.” - Steve Kalland State of Change producer Michelle Lotker sat down with Steve Kalland, executive director of NC State’s NC Clean Energy Technology Center, to talk about solar energy production in North Carolina, how it can work alongside agriculture and the future. "The nice thing about solar is you lease out your land, and you’re usually signing an agreement for 20 years. You’ve got a steady stream of revenue that comes from that project, and that stabilizes the finances of farms and gives the ability for those folks to continue farming the rest of their property." Steve continues, "There is a lot of controversy around the country about the loss of farmland to development. When you talk about big box stores or subdivisions going on that land, that land is lost. It is no longer going to be farmland. With solar, it’s a little bit different because you can remove that solar project from that land 20 years from now and go back to an agricultural use for that land. When that project runs its course, it might get repowered and turn into the next generation of solar project, but it might also get turned into agricultural land again." Read the full interview by Michelle Lotker: https://lnkd.in/eVThjAgc State of Change: Solar Harvest premieres February 6 on PBS NC and streaming on the PBS app.

☀️ Transforming utilities | General Manager Australia at Kaluza | Energy transition optimist | LinkedIn Top Voice | Networker | Speaker | Dad ☀️ (Views are my own)
#Batteries have started to show their strength in California's grid, soaking up solar in the middle of the day and discharging it back during the evening peak. The chart compares the average daily generation for the month of April. In 2021 batteries were barely noticeable. By 2024 they were playing a significant role in the evening peak, displacing gas and reducing California's reliance on imports. In terms of the numbers in California: ➡️ Batteries are now discharging (and charging) at over 8 GW. ➡️ They can supply around 30% of peak load. ➡️ They are at times the largest source of supply on the grid, a role traditionally played by fossil gas. They are a perfect complement to solar generation, helping to shift supply to times when it is needed most. Western Australia is experiencing a boom in rooftop solar, which meets up to 80% of grid demand in the middle of the day. The state is also investing in energy storage and will see some significant batteries coming online this year and next, with a total capacity around 2,000 MW, which is huge compared to average grid demand of 2,800 MW. With continued improvements in battery energy density and cost, as well as new chemistries, we are going to see more and more batteries being deployed to support the grid. EVs will also start to play a role via V2X. We are just on the cusp of much more widespread adoption. Onwards and upwards! #energy #sustainability #renewables #energytransition
