Module Description:

This learning module from the Support Center for Microsystems Education introduces students to the different types of cells, aspects of cell growth, and the types of organelles found within cells. The material focuses on cells in relation to bioMEMS (bio- microelectromechanical systems).

Module Contents:

This module includes four instructor guides, four participant guides, a PowerPoint presentation, and a learning module map. PDF and DOC versions are provided for each guide. The included guides are Knowledge Probe (KP) or pre-quiz, Primary Knowledge (PK), Activity, and Final Assessment. Instructor guides include additional content such as instructor notes as well as questions and answers.

The learning module map provides information about the module including module contents, target audience, and a map that is divided into the following three sections: Important Steps, Key Points, and Reasons.

The Knowledge Probe (KP) or pre-quiz is intended "to determine the participants' current knowledge of cells, their structure and function and their applications to bioMEMS devices prior to starting the Cells Learning Module." Ten questions are included.

The Primary Knowledge (PK) unit "provides introductory material that is needed to better understan the applicaiton of MicroElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS) in the medical field." This unit has the following objectives:

  • Define and interpret the Cell Theory.
  • Describe similarities and differences of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
  • Identify and describe the functions of cellular structures (cell membrane, cell wall, nucleus, cytoplasm, chloroplast, mitochondria) within a cell.

The included activity "is a research activity that ties cell structure, function, and growth to BioMEMS devices." Post activity questions are included.

The final assessment tests the participants' knowledge after the module has been completed. Ten questions are included.

The PowerPoint presentation has the following objectives:

  • Define and interpret The Cell Theory.
  • Describe similarities and differences of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
  • Identify and describe the functions of cellular structures (cell membrane, cell wall, nucleus, cytoplasm, chloroplast, mitochondria) within a cell.

For orientation purposes App_BioMEM_P1_LM34_map.pdf is included as separate attachment and offers a sample of the type of material included in this module.
