Module Description:

This module, from Support Center for Microsystems Education (SCME), provides students with "information needed to understand how the digitally encoded information in DNA is translated into a functional protein that can be used for biomedical applications." This module is divided into the following five units: Knowledge Probe (KP or pre-test), Primary Knowledge (PK - reading material), Protein Structure and Function Activity, Gene Transcription Activity, and Final Assessment.

Module Contents:

The module includes six instructor guides, five participant guides, and a presentation. PDF and DOC versions are provided for all of the guides. The included guides are DNA to Protein Overview Primary Knowledge (PK), DNA to Protein Overview Knowledge Probe (Pre-Test), two activities, and an assessment. Instructor guides include additional content such as instructor notes and questions and answers. A Learning Module Map (LM) Instructor Guide is also included.

The LM map provides information about the module including module contents, target audience, and a map that is divided into the following three sections: Important Steps, Key Points, and Reasons.

DNA to Protein Overview Primary Knowledge (PK) is an instructional unit with the following objectives:

  • Describe the genetic code.
  • Explain the "central dogma" of biology: DNA → RNA → Protein (polypeptide), and differentiate the separate parts that comprise the dogma.
  • Describe the function of the components of Protein Translation.

The following sections are included in this unit guide: Introduction, MEMS Applications within Proteomics, Objectives, Key Terms, The Central Dogma of Biology, The RNA Molecule, RNA's Role in "DNA to Protein", The Genetic Code, The Role of tRNA in Translation, and more.

In the Protein Structure and Function Activity, students gain "a better understanding of DNA and the information provided in the Primary Knowledge reading unit." Objectives for the activity include:

  • List the functions of proteins.
  • Describe an application in which proteins are used in microsystems technology.
  • Describe the Central Dogma of Biology.

The Gene Transcription Activity provides "a mechanism that allows [students] to apply [their] knowledge in transcribing and translating a gene." During the activity, students "use the genetic code to predict the amino acid structure of a protein."

The DNA to Protein Overview Assessment includes 14 questions and is intended to be given to students at the completion of the module.

A presentation is also included that provides a unit overview, objectives, and information on protein translation as well as its application to MEMS. The presentation is provided in both PDF and PowerPoint formats.

For orientation purposes App_BioMEM_P1_Map_33.pdf is included as a separate attachment and offers a sample of the type of material included in this module.

Below is a list of the files included in the .zip attachment. The size of each file is included in parenthesis.
