The National Center for Optics and Photonics Education OP-TEC will be offering a hybrid, online faculty development course. The course will cover OP-TEC’s Fundamentals of Light and Lasers. Each of the six modules will be taught online over a two-week period with a high level of self-paced instruction combined with an interactive component facilitated by e-mail exchanges and chat room discussions. Modules include Nature and Properties of Light, Optical Handling and Positioning, Light Sources and Laser Safety, Basic Geometrical Optics, Basic Physical Optics and Principles of Lasers. This course is being offered at no charge to high school, community college and technical college faculty interested in teaching a basic photonics course. Participants who successfully complete the 12-week course and 3-day laboratory session will receive a certificate of completion from OP-TEC. Participants will also be awarded 9 CEUs from Camden County College. The course is scheduled to start September 21, 2009. The six modules will be taught over a 12-week period. After the completion of Module 6, all participants will spend a 3-day period at Camden County College in Blackwood, NJ, where they will have the opportunity to conduct all laboratory experiments included in the course and discuss with experienced instructors best practices for teaching the materials. This laboratory session will be scheduled for June 2010 and will be arranged at a time that is mutually agreeable to the participants. The online course and materials will be offered at no charge. Participants will be responsible for all travel and lodging expenses to attend the 3-day laboratory session. To complete the course, participants must have access to a computer, printer, telephone/cell phone and internet access. Participants will utilize the Blackboard system. The highest levels of community college administration face significant challenges in supporting technology programs at their institutions. They are faced with a quandary. For economic development in their region, a skilled workforce is critical in the IT, manufacturing, engineering technology and biotechnology sectors, for example. To be responsive to those sectors, presidents recognize the need to support and maintain the currency of their technology education programs. However, enrollments in many programs (excluding health care) are suffering, and the cost of expensive laboratory equipment and infrastructure may force a CEO's decision to limit the college's support. Industry has the expectation that colleges will, of course, support these programs.

Deans and faculty members address a whole series of related issues. They are much more on the front line of struggling with the classes' need to make as well as limited resources for recruiting and promotion activities. How do they balance fulfilling students' needs, the budget, the expectations of industry, and the demands of the upper administration?

In this web seminar, following introductory remarks, the moderator will set the stage for the discussion. A college president, dean and faculty member will address these significant challenges. The panelists will explore the question of sustainability of the current status quo. They will respond to the question: "Will technology education programs as we know them disappear and be replaced by new models for workforce and economic development?"

EDGD invites you to join us in Erie, PA for their 64th Mid-year Conference. This mid-year conference focuses on graphics in the field of engineering. The Mid-Year Conference will also offer you a chance to meet and converse with leading engineering graphics educators at 4-year colleges, as well as with educators from 2-year colleges. Many of the regular attendees are authors of the most popular engineering graphics textbooks on the market today. Snort for the Home User: The home environment is very different from coporate or other large enterprise networks but the principles of securing it remain largely the same. This seminar will discuss the basics of security assessment, assembling a Snort policy and event analysis. There will be lab exercises to back up the concepts presented.

The National Council for Workforce Education is a private, nonprofit, professional organization committed to promoting excellence and growth in workforce education at the post secondary level. NCWE, an affiliate council of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), provides a national forum for administrators and faculty in occupational, vocational, technical, and career education as well as representatives of business, labor, military, and government, to affect and direct the future role of two-year and other post-secondary institutions in work-related education. Gloria Rogers, the 2008 Fellow of the American Society of Engineering Education, will present. Gloria Rogers provides workshops, webinars, seminars, and institutes for the development of continuous quality improvement of educational programs and institutional effectiveness related to strategic planning. She has been an external evaluator for major STEM initiatives and has developed an interactive CD ROM, “Assessment Planning Flowchart” to aid programs in their program assessment plan development.

The American Association of Community Colleges with the support of the National Science Foundation will hold the sixteenth national ATE Principal Investigators Conference, "Technicians in the Green Economy" at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC. The conference will bring together approximately 800 people to focus on the critical issues related to advanced technological education. Key people working on ATE projects across the country will participate in the conference. Conference attendees represent community colleges, business and industry, secondary school systems, four-year colleges, and research and development centers covering projects in a wide variety of areas such as: information technology, engineering technology, micro- and nanotechnologies, chemical technology, biotechnology, and others.

Dr. Chanddra Roychoudhuri, a renowned physics researcher in the field of Photonics at the University of Connecticut, will be the guest speaker at the Epsilon Pi Tau Dinner on Wednesday, October 21. Dr. Roychoudhuri will talk about physics, light and the way it helps us view the world. His speech, entitled "How We Are Becoming Knowledge-Age Neanderthals", will also focus on solar warming and constructing an "adaptable collective purpose for the human species to evolve congruently with the biosphere." The dinner begins at 6:30 and is open to students inducted into Epsilon Pi Tau and the general public. Cost is $6 for MCC students who are Epsilon members, and $12 for the general public. This Project will provide a series of three-day, intensive focused, hands-on professional and curriculum development workshops/conferences and follow-up activities for physics teachers in TYCs and HSs. These workshops and conferences are aimed at teachers who serve students involved in technology-based or technician careers. There will be four workshop/conferences per year held at various TYCs with special incentives to encourage teams of HS and TYC teachers. This project is builds upon and earlier physics workshop project that held 61 workshops over 15 years.

Educators from TYCs HSs, and colleges/universities, which include implementation leaders, and developers from buisness and industry will lead these workshops. They will deal with effective integration, technology implementation, and learning strategies in areas such as micromputer-based laboratories, digital video, computer simulations, conceptual tasks and tools, web and internet activities, group work, assessment of learning, and physics related technician education.
