8th Life Discovery - Doing Science Biology Education Conference

(3 days) Florida A&M University1601 S Martin Luther King Jr BlvdTallahasseeFL32307

This conference proposes to take stock of the dramatic developments from the past two years to ask: Variants in Biology Education: What can we learn from pandemics?

Over the last two years, teaching and learning has grappled with the demands of change in response to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic within a highly politicized landscape for which science is on the defense and misinformation is rampant. Never before have so many questions arisen about the implications for mainstream organismal biology education, and never before has the speed and scale of innovation been put into practice. The “pandemic” symbolizes change, resistance, immunity, adaptation, and opportunity at so many different levels – literally, in our personal lives, in education, and in mass culture. It compels us to consider the workforce needs of the future where pandemics are now ubiquitous among all living organisms: people, plants, and animals (domestic and wild).

NCyTE Monthly Meeting: Autonomous and Semi-Autonomous Systems

The National Cybersecurity Training and Education (NCyTE) Center is featuring Zackary Nicklin from the National Center of Autonomous Technologies (NCAT) at this month's membership meeting. Zackary will deliver a primer on autonomous systems, in multiple domains such as air, land and sea, and the critical role cybersecurity plays in their operations. With the speed of adoption of these systems, they are becoming ubiquitous in everyday life, for many of us. As we adopt more of this technology for uses such as package delivery, search and rescue, inspection and Advanced Air Mobility, safekeeping of the command-and-control links and the outputs produced becomes more and more of a priority.

The Power of Infrared Spectroelectrochemical Techniques in Observing Surface Chemistry

In daily lives, there are many applications relying on electrochemistry, a branch of chemistry that deals with interconversion of chemical energy and electrical energy. For example, batteries convert stored chemical energy into electrical energy inside devices like smartphones. Electrocatalysts are types of chemicals which can increase the speed, efficiency and selectivity of electrochemical reactions that happen on electrode surfaces. Nanomaterials are especially excellent electrocatalysts due to larger number of reactive atoms on the surfaces compared to those on bulk materials as well as their flexibility for post-processing. On the other hand, the role of electrocatalysts play during electrochemical reactions is difficult to interpret because of the complexity of nanomaterial itself as well as chemical reactions that happen at the interface of solid electrodes and liquid electrolytes.

The aim of the talk is to introduce a state-of-the-art spectroscopic technique based on infrared spectroscopy that can be used to characterize the chemical species adsorbed on the electrode surfaces and provide ample information about the changes in the structures of adsorbed species under different conditions.

CCSF Workplace Navigation Workshop: Utilizing an Interview to determine a Good Fit

This NSF supported CCSF-UCSF collaboration is inviting biotech-bioscience community college students, alumni and faculty/staff to join online workshops developed for community college bioscience-biotech students and provide input/feedback to help adapt them to a broader audience.

Goal of the Workforce Navigation Training: Provide students/trainees with the knowledge, skills, support and clarity they need to effectively assess and successfully navigate any lab environment and achieve their professional and career goals.

Go beyond focusing solely on presenting yourself as the optimal candidate and utilize the interview to determine if an internship/job opportunity is a “Good Fit” for you! In this workshop gain strategies to clarify your career and educational goals and frame questions to obtain accurate information to assess if a workplace will support those goals, while also learning to recognize potential misalignments.

Learning outcomes:

  • Define what a ‘bad fit' or 'toxic work environment’ is
  • Outline and clarify your own goals before the interview
  • Use questions during an interview to determine whether a workplace is in alignment with your goals and values
  • Articulate strategies and practice language to frame questions
  • Describe examples of verbal and non-verbal red flags indicating the opportunity may not be a “Good Fit”
  • Describe factors that can make it difficult to recognize and weigh the potential impact of red flags during and after an interview
