Program Description:

The Center for Advanced Automotive Technology (CAAT) and Macomb Community College (MCC) have developed curriculum for two Electric Vehicle Technology Certificate programs, one in product development, and the other in service, to prepare individuals with the fundamental skills and abilities for careers in these fields. These certificate programs are sequences of technical and professional courses that are industry focused and designed for workforce preparation. These courses may also apply toward other technical certificates and associate degree programs

Course Description:

This four-credit Auto-2920 provides practical training in the theory and basic design aspects of electric vehicle propulsion systems and is a required course for MCC’s Electric Vehicle Development Technology Certificate. Primary subjects covered include rationale for electric vehicles (EVs), safety, battery technologies, basic battery testing, electric machine (motor) types, electric machine operation, power management, power inverters, DC to DC converters, accessory systems, and potential future technologies.

Course Contents:

This course is composed of nine modules that can be used to supplement existing courses or can be taught together as a complete course. These modules include: The Need for EVs, EV Safety, Introduction to Battery Chemistry, Battery Pack Integration with Vehicle Systems, Electric Machines (DC Motors, AD Induction Asynchronous Motors, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor, and Switched Reluctance Motors), Power Inverter/Electronic Motor Controls, DC to DC Converters, Vehicle Accessory Systems, and Introduction to Advancing Technology (Fuel Cells, Ultra Capacitors, and Hydraulic Propulsion). Educational materials included are the first day handout, detailed course outcomes, homework (no solutions), labs, pre/post assessments, presentations, sample quizzes/exams, syllabus, and more. Instructors may contact CAAT for homework solutions and complete exams and quizzes.

The five-page syllabus includes a short description of the course, states eight course outcomes and their associated objectives, common degree outcomes, course assessments, and a course content outline.
