Energizing Math with Engineering Applications: Understanding the Math behind Launching a Straw-Rocket through the use of Simulations.

This classroom activity and presentation, which is seven pages in length and provided by InnovATE at Palm Beach Community College, provides students with an opportunity to learn mathematical concepts through a straw-rocket launch simulation.  This document details the learning activity, which is comprised of five parts: Initial Guess; Experimentation and Data Collection; Checking the Experimental Results against the Theoretical Formulas; Setting the Correct Parameters in Order to Hit a Target; and Derivation of Some of the Formulas Used.  Each part contains corresponding mathematical questions.  This resource is the student version of the activity; an instructor version with answers is also available in ATE Central and is entitled, "An application of Projectile Motion: Launching a Straw Rocket (of a Baseball or a Golf Ball...), Instructor Version."
