Collection Description:

This collection includes materials from the DroneTech Educator Workshop: Drones and Geospatial Applications that was held by the National Center for Autonomous Technologies (NCAT). "This workshop ... focus[ed] on developing and integrating practical applications of Drone and Geospatial Technology use into curriculum. Ongoing applied research projects ... provide[d] data and examples of how drones and geospatial technology can be used to enhance STEM education into subject areas." The workshop had the following objectives:

  • Show how drones can be used to support and enhance curriculum, especially in the 6-12 grade levels.
  • Illustrate some basic concepts on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV or drones) and the sensors flown on them (unmanned aerial systems or UAS).
  • Develop lesson plan templates that can be employed to utilize UAS technologies in various classroom situations.

Collection Contents:

Workshop materials are divided into the following seven folders: PreWork, Intro to Workshop, Types of UAS Analysis, UAS Imagery and GIS, Lesson Plan Examples, Group Discussion - Lesson Plan Designs, and Video Recording and Chat Narrative. Workshop materials include a schedule, a UAS flight log, Drone Tech bios, presentations, video recordings of the workshop, and .kmz files for use with ArcGIS Story Maps.

The presentations cover the following topics: an introduction to drones, remote images, FAA sUAS Rule 107, orthomosaics and DSMSs, types of UAS analysis, partnerships, ArcGIS Online and Story Maps, and more.

The Lesson Plan Examples folder includes numerous .kmz files that can be used with ArcGIS Story Maps. A presentation that covers getting started with Story Maps is also provided.

A video recording is provided for each day of the workshop. These videos are accompanied by audio only recording and chat text files. The video recording from day one runs 03:52:18 minutes in length. The video recording from day two runs 04:24:04 minutes in length.

For orientation purposes WORKSHOP_INTRODUCTION.pdf is included as a separate attachment and offers a sample of the types of material included in this collection.

Below is a list of the files contained within the .zip attachment. The size of each file is included in parenthesis.
