Learning Activity 1.1: Marshmallow Preparation - Measurement and Calculations

This 7-page learning activity, was published by Erie Community College and is from the Introduction to Vacuum Technology Student and Instructor Laboratory Manuals that accompany the Introduction to Vacuum Technology E-Book. This activity has students measure the dimensions of a cylindrically-shaped object, such as a marshmallow. Students also make "... calculations of surface area, volume, and density of the cylindrically-shaped object."

The activity includes a summary, learning objectives, a pre-lab assignment, theoretical background, a list of equipment and materials needed, and the activity procedure. Activity learning outcomes include:

  1. Measure linear dimensions and the mass of a cylindrical object using proper techniques.
  2. Calculate surface area and volume of a cylindrical object.
  3. Calculate density of an object.
  4. Report final calculated results with the correct number of significant digits.

The E-book, laboratory manuals, other learning activities, and related videos are available to view separately.
