Students today have been born and brought up in a digital world characterized by multimedia, and social networking. This extends beyond highly technical gadgets, and includes opportunities and encouragement for self-directed learning, creativity, and empowerment. Engineering education must embrace these changes and address the challenges and opportunities that it faces. We need to understand how the digital generation learns, communicates, and socializes in ways which are significantly different than the previous generation. This generation can seem to be, even to those only one generation older, both extraordinarily sophisticated and strangely narrow. In the coming years, how should engineering and technology education respond to the needs of the digital generation? This will be the theme for an exciting and thought provoking weekend of professional workshops, presentations, and discussions at Wentworth Institute of Technology.
