As community colleges redesign and retrofit campuses in greener ways, institutions can use these projects as hands-on learning opportunities for students. These so-called “living laboratories” merge academics and campus facilities management to provide students with real-world skills and, for the institution, a path to meet its sustainability goals. The American Association of Community Colleges’ SEED Center, St. Clair County Community College, the BEST Center, and Siemens Industry Inc. are hosting a national workshop to help colleges build successful living laboratory initiatives. National best practice colleges and experts will address some of the biggest challenges, from student safety to engaging industry in curriculum development. The summit will be designed for faculty, deans, sustainability officers, and facilities directors. It will be a highly participatory deep dive into how these initiatives work and can work better. Read SEED’s new living lab toolkit, which serves as the basis for this workshop. Attendance will be capped at 20: Register by emailing sustainability@aacc.nche.edu
