Small, unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) or “drones” have become popular in mainstream society for a host of practical and professional applications. The use of sUAS for geospatial applications is evolving with time, but knowing how to fly and relevant FAA regulations is critical for safe flight operations. This Exploratorium introduces sUAS safety considerations in commercial and recreational applications, discusses the differences between sUAS types, presents photogrammetry considerations, and presents the use of mapping software to produce geospatial models. Drones will be flown in the venue auditorium during this session. This Exploratorium is applicable to the new sUAS user or those interested in drones for remote sensing use. Not for the experienced drone user.
