In the last decades 3D city models have been used mainly for visualisation. However, nowadays they are being increasingly employed for simulations and spatial analyses in many application domains. For example, they can be used to estimate the energy demand of buildings, and as a platform to support smart cities. This presentation will present 3D experiences from the Netherlands, and it will shortly overview the current developments in the acquisition, standardisation (e.g. OGC CityGML), and utilisation of 3D city models.
