Since the Fall of 2021, students and faculty from College of the Canyons have engaged in multidisciplinary design collaborations with students and faculty from other colleges and universities worldwide. Aside from the unique educational experiences these projects have provided Canyons students, faculty have also benefitted through development of new technical skills and enhanced currency in the A/E/C profession. Projects with educational institutions in El Salvador, Romania, and Scotland will be discussed which have included language barriers as well as concurrent participation in the U.S. Department of Energy/NREL Solar Decathlon Design Challenge.

Jason Oliver, AIA, LEED AP BD+C (Chair of the COC Architecture Program) will present an overview of the process employed in initiating these international collaborations, managing student/faculty teams, and lessons learned with the hope of inspiring other community college programs to explore similar unique Project Based Learning experiences to build international relationships for the benefit of student learning and educator professional development.
