Normandale Community College (NCC) will host a two-day, Plasma-Aided Manufacturing Workshop for high school, community college and university faculty involved in technician education on March 19th and 20th, 2009. This workshop is funded through a grant from the National Science Foundation’s Advanced Technological Education Program. The two-day workshop will cover the following topics: • Introduction to Plasma Physics • Plasma Sources • Transmission Line Fundamentals • RF Delivery & Impedance Matching • Sputtering as a Manufacturing Process. The workshop will be divided between classroom presentations/discussions and hands-on laboratory sessions. Participants will view demonstrations and perform experiments in NCC’s Plasma Technology Laboratory. The workshop will begin at 8:30 am on, March 19th, and conclude at 4:00 pm on Friday, March 20th. NCC’s grant will cover the cost of all workshop materials, lodging for 3 nights, meals, and local transportation in Bloomington, MN. Communications and networking embody the heart and the nerve system of the information technology - a technology that is profoundly affecting our daily lives. Experts, researchers, managers, and entrepreneurs in this dynamic field often encounter challenges that lead to innovative basic as well as applied research and developments. You are invited to submit full papers reporting original work to a forum where experts from industry and academia meet and exchange ideas on the topics. This international forum provides a bridge between the communications industry and academic research laboratories.
This webinar will explore the way in which the structure and composition of large arteries near the heart change with age, thus making them stiffer and how this increase in stiffness leads to high blood pressure, the main cause of death in the developed world. It will discuss possible biomechanical reasons for blood pressure variability in populations and conclude with a brief description of a new treatment based on manipulating arterial mechanical properties. Webinar begins at 12:30 pm EDT. Webinars are live presentations, given by a technical leader, that you can take part in from your desk or conference room. All you need to participate is a phone and an Internet connection. After registration, you will receive an e-mail confirmation and instructions on how to join the meeting. SME webinars are typically hosted by one or more of our Technical Community Network (TCN) tech groups, technical events and/or professional development. Webinars help SME fulfill its mission, which is to acquire and distribute manufacturing knowledge among its members and the broader manufacturing community.
Manufacturing requires controls to be repeatable. The expertise that evolved RP into what it is today has opened Pandora's box for process control. Determining what must be measured, how to measure, and how to control it are critical to success. Considerations needed to successfully apply Direct Manufacturing as a production process will be presented. Webinar begins at 3 pm EDT. This SME Composites Manufacturing 2009 webinar characterizes the special features of milling and drilling CFRP and develops aspects for new tool geometries for milling CFRP/Titanium. Simplified theoretic models will show how CFRP should be machined and what has to be observed concerning new developments. Low axial forces are the main characteristics of the drilling tool optimized in this way, which makes it especially suited for being used in drilling feed units. This webinar begins at 12:00 EDT. This starts with a challenge for engineers and tech: “On and annualized basis, find a half million seconds for every mold in the shop.” Partly this is done to keep the engineers and techs interested. More importantly it allows money to be generated as both extra profit for the company and money available to give out raises for a successful completion of this challenge. The presentation starts looking at a typical part. Then reviews what would happen if segments of the process were improved: Reduced scrap, reduced cycle time, regrind usage enhancement, weight reduction and reduced setup times. While the cumulative effect of all of these improvements isn’t completely additive it shows how this goal can be achieved.
Presenter William (Bill) J. Tobin is the owner of WJT Associates a consulting firm specializing in improving the productivity of Injection Molding. He is a prolific writer and frequent presenter of seminars both in the US and Internationally. Through his career he has been employed in the business machine, automotive, medical, telecommunications, and toy industries. He is a Fellow of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) of which he has been a member for more than 20 of his 30-plus years in the plastics industry. Tobin is the originator of SMEs Mold Tooling Matrix.
