The National Center for Optics and Photonics Education OP-TEC will be offering a hybrid, online faculty development course. The course will cover OP-TEC’s Fundamentals of Light and Lasers. Each of the six modules will be taught online over a two-week period with a high level of self-paced instruction combined with an interactive component facilitated by e-mail exchanges and chat room discussions. Modules include Nature and Properties of Light, Optical Handling and Positioning, Light Sources and Laser Safety, Basic Geometrical Optics, Basic Physical Optics and Principles of Lasers. This course is being offered at no charge to high school, community college and technical college faculty interested in teaching a basic photonics course. Participants who successfully complete the 12-week course and 3-day laboratory session will receive a certificate of completion from OP-TEC. Participants will also be awarded 9 CEUs from Camden County College. The course is scheduled to start September 21, 2009. The six modules will be taught over a 12-week period. After the completion of Module 6, all participants will spend a 3-day period at Camden County College in Blackwood, NJ, where they will have the opportunity to conduct all laboratory experiments included in the course and discuss with experienced instructors best practices for teaching the materials. This laboratory session will be scheduled for June 2010 and will be arranged at a time that is mutually agreeable to the participants. The online course and materials will be offered at no charge. Participants will be responsible for all travel and lodging expenses to attend the 3-day laboratory session. To complete the course, participants must have access to a computer, printer, telephone/cell phone and internet access. Participants will utilize the Blackboard system. Workshop will discuss the changes in the electronic market place.What''''s new and the functionality, compared to older more established products. Concepts such as flash memory, video cameras vs digital tape cameras, Netbook PCs vs traditional laptops, quad core computers vs dual core, web cameras, wireless keyboards IR or Bluetooth. These topics and others will be covered in the workshop from both functional discussion and price comparison. The National Science Foundation, NSF, supports Centers of Excellence to bring cutting edge technical curriculum for us in the high school and community college environment. Two of these NSF Centers, The Nanotechnology Applications and Career Knowledge NACK and the Florida Center for Advanced Technological Education FLATE have partnered with the University of South Florida College of Engineering Nanomaterials and Nanomanufacturing Research Center NNRC to present a one day workshop on Nanotechnology based curriculum and resources, demonstrations, and tour of the USF nano facility. In addition, participants will be introduced to the STEM principles used to develop and measure the low pressure controlled environments used in micro, mems and nano technologies.

The Fall Meeting is expected to draw a crowd of over 16,000 geophysicists from around the world. The Fall Meeting provides an opportunity for researchers, teachers, students, and consultants to present and review the latest issues affecting the Earth, the planets, and their environments in space. This meeting will cover topics in all areas of Earth and space sciences.

The ICT Careers Day, held in partnership with CAITE, is scheduled for Monday, December 14th at the University of Massachusetts Boston. This event brings together high school juniors and seniors to learn about technology through hands-on activities with industry partners. In years past, companies such as EMC, IBM, Microsoft, Suffolk Technology Partners and many others have participated in this event.
The Cisco Networking Academy has released a new CCNA level network security curriculum for Fall 2009. The new course provides students with in-depth network security education and a comprehensive understanding of network security concepts. The course is designed to provide students with hands-on knowledge and skills, emphasizing practical experience needed for entry-level job roles in network security. This curriculum reflects the latest network security technologies and provides hands-on exercises. The hands-on exercises teach installation, troubleshooting and monitoring of network devices to maintain integrity, confidentiality and availability of data and devices. The class is designed to prepare students for CCNA Security certification IINS 640-553 exam. This class requires a mandatory orientation meeting & capstone session. Orientation meeting - December 11th from 8:30a.m. - 12:30p.m. - you will receive a webex invitation for this. The class session is on December 16, 17 & 18 @ Stanly Community College - Whitley Technology Center Room 122.
