Eighteen conference fellowships are available to attend the 12th annual weeklong intensive
Summer Fellows Forum. The Bio-Link National Center will select individuals geographically to
receive the fellowship from the following categories: a community or technical college
biotechnology instructor, a community or technical college math or science instructor, and a high
school teacher. First consideration will be given to applicants who have not yet attended a Bio-
Link Summer Fellows Forum or received the fellowship. However, consideration will be given
to past Fellows who can demonstrate how this conference will provide necessary and unique
value to their students, region and themselves.
At the Forum, participants will learn new skills and techniques, examine and test exemplary
curriculum models and course material, engage in dialogue about ethical, legal, and social issues
in biotechnology and learn how to disseminate this information within their own regions.
Fellows are expected to implement new strategies into their own programs, to lead regional staff
development activities, and provide prompt response to follow-up surveys.
The Bio-Link Fellowship (Application below) includes single occupancy accommodations (or
commuter if local) and designated meals. Due to rising accommodation and meal costs any
lodging charges associated with "no shows", late arrivals, early departures or unattended meals
will become the responsibility of the Fellow and billed to the Fellow at the conclusion of the
Forum. It is the Fellows responsibility to fund all travel costs (including parking and shuttle
fees) to and from the Forum.
Deadline for application to the National Center is Friday, March 26th, 2010. Once the
fellowships have been awarded, Fellows will be notified and emailed the “Fellowship
Registration Form” with further registration instructions and information.

This workshop will explore the georeferencing of historical maps. A historical map that was originally created on paper will not have an electronic reference to the surface of the earth. This workshop will explore how to take a map that was originally created on paper and reference it to the surface of the earth so that it can be utilized in a geospatial system. This allows the educator to utilize today’s images with data created in the past. The specific case that will be done will be to georeference civil war battlefields with imagery and shapefiles of today. The heads up digitization of information contained on the map will also be done. No previous GIS knowledge is required. Online video and printable documents will be available for the participants to use after the workshop. Instructor: Vince DiNoto Workshop will meet in Room 108 of the Business building.

This second annual conference provides a regional and Kentucky perspective of geospatial education in the P-16 segment. Presentations by leaders and practitioners in the field will provide participants with an up-to-date view. Plenary sessions and professional development tracks include the following topics: -Educational initiatives in GIS, remote sensing and other geospatial fields -What’s the outlook for P-16 geospatial careers in Kentucky and the region -Current software development and applications for geospatial education
Nanotechnology really does impact a wide range of industries. You may be under the impression that it is limited to electronics, but it actually spans across many different disciplines. The food industry is another sector that is very interested in how nanotechnology can improve current production methods. Traditional fabrication methods, along with new techniques in self-assembly, are being applied to food processing. Food scientists and engineers are working to improve nutritional content and delivery, packaging, and the ability to track and monitor products over time.

NACK Center staff will give an overview of how nanotechnology is impacting the food industry by providing some examples of recent advancements in this area. Current research will also be discussed to bring some insight into where the future of food processing may be heading. You may be surprised to learn that the food industry is already taking advantage of these modifications based at the nano-scale.
Now in its 31st year, ISTE's Annual Conference & Exposition features an amazing array of professional learning and collaborative networking opportunities. As part of your conference registration, you can choose from more than 600 sessions—formal sessions and hands-on labs, traditional and student poster presentations, Birds-of-a-Feather discussions, and themed lounges and playgrounds. And three inspirational keynotes!

Spend time this summer learning how to explore the world and your local community using Geographic Information Systems GIS, global positioning system GPS and remote sensing at the Teaching with Spatial Technology Workshop TwiST. In its 9th summer, K-12 and college educators will spend 4 days this summer from June 28 – July 2, 2010 at Cayuga Community College in Auburn, NY. During this 4-day workshop educators will learn how to use a variety of GIS tools such as Google Earth and ArcGIS. Using these tools participants will map features important to the conservation of their local watershed. Topics to be covered this year in the workshop will go beyond just water resources. Participants will also use geospatial technologies to explore solar and wind power as sources of alternative energies and explore global environmental issues. Participants will learn how to collect and gather data to create their own lessons and how to tie them into state education standards. Registration is $400. The fee includes: 4-days of training, a GPS instrument, notebooks of materials, data, the opportunity to obtain an ESRI school-wide site license at a discounted rate, lunches and approximately $1,200 worth of additional GIS learning resources.
