Students will acquire skill through hands on and virtual labs using the Cisco Packet tracer.
As part of our efforts to provide faculty development in optics and photonics, OP-TEC will be offering a hybrid, online faculty development course. The course will cover OP-TEC’s Fundamentals of Light and Lasers. Each of the six modules will be taught online over a two-week period with a high level of self-paced instruction combined with an interactive component facilitated by e-mail exchanges and chat room discussions
Fundamentals of Light and Lasers Modules:
* Module 1: Nature and Properties of Light
* Module 2: Optical Handling and Positioning
* Module 3: Light Sources and Laser Safety
* Module 4: Basic Geometrical Optics
* Module 5: Basic Physical Optics
* Module 6: Principles of Lasers
This online course is being offered at no charge to high school, community college and technical college faculty interested in teaching a basic photonics course. Participants who successfully complete the 12-week course and 3-day laboratory session will receive a certificate of completion from OP-TEC. Participants will also be awarded 9 CEUs from Indian Hills Community College.
Next course date: Starts March 1, 2010 (12-week course runs 3/1/10 – 5/21/10)
The six modules will be taught over a 12-week period. After the completion of Module 6, all participants will spend a 3-day period at Indian Hills Community College (Ottumwa, Iowa), where they will have the opportunity to conduct all laboratory experiments included in the course and discuss with experienced instructors best practices for teaching the materials. The laboratory session will be scheduled for June 17-19, 2010.

Along with the keynotes, you will also have the opportunity to attend FREE show floor presentations focusing on Lean & Green, Global Market – U.S. Tax Incentives and Health Insurance Programs for Machine Shops. If that isn't enough WESTEC is offering economical paid technical sessions in the areas that interest you most such as; Swiss Style Screw Machining, Machining of Exotic Metals, Milling, Drilling and Cutting of Advanced Carbon Fiber and/or Carbon Fiber Laminates and Additive Manufacturing.
Still looking for more...
Hundreds of new products are set to debut at WESTEC 2010 and you can find over 175 of them in our new online WESTEC New Product & Show Planner! These products will help you find solutions to run a leaner, more competitive operation. There's no denying it. Manufacturing is changing and in ways you probably never imagined: new economic forces, stiff competition advances in technology, demands to work lean and green, emerging industries, and global markets.
Get the inside track on running a manufacturing enterprise, buying machinery, and manufacturing leadership. Rounding out the week are complimentary sessions on becoming and staying a successful manufacturer, keynotes, and a panel discussion. If you want to be part of new supply chains, WESTEC should be your first stop.
The game is changing. Want to make sure your company not only grows, but evolves? Make sure you get to WESTEC.

What Can YOU Do?
NanoDays activities often bring university researchers together with science museum educators, creating unique learning experiences. NanoDays engages people of all ages in a miniscule world where materials have special properties and new technologies have spectacular promise.
Many NanoDays celebrations will combine simple hands-on activities for young people with events exploring current research for adults. One popular activity involves visitors working together to build a giant balloon model of a carbon nanotube. (Real carbon nanotubes, which are 1/50,000th of the width of a human hair, have extraordinary strength and unusual electrical properties that make them useful in electronics and materials science.
Other NanoDays activities demonstrate different, unexpected properties of materials at the nanoscale -- sand that won’t get wet even under water, water that won’t spill from a teacup, and colors that depend upon particle size.
Some NanoDays participants host public forums, discussions about the risks and benefits of particular appllications of nanotechnology. Many participating universities host public tours of their laboratories that work with nanoscale science and technology.
