The course emphasizes concepts and skills required to design networks, while providing opportunities for practical application and hands-on experience by teaching students how to install, operate, and maintain networks.
Students will acquire skill through hands on and virtual labs using the Cisco Packet tracer.
As part of our efforts to provide faculty development in optics and photonics, OP-TEC will be offering a hybrid, online faculty development course. The course will cover OP-TEC’s Fundamentals of Light and Lasers. Each of the six modules will be taught online over a two-week period with a high level of self-paced instruction combined with an interactive component facilitated by e-mail exchanges and chat room discussions
Fundamentals of Light and Lasers Modules:
* Module 1: Nature and Properties of Light
* Module 2: Optical Handling and Positioning
* Module 3: Light Sources and Laser Safety
* Module 4: Basic Geometrical Optics
* Module 5: Basic Physical Optics
* Module 6: Principles of Lasers
This online course is being offered at no charge to high school, community college and technical college faculty interested in teaching a basic photonics course. Participants who successfully complete the 12-week course and 3-day laboratory session will receive a certificate of completion from OP-TEC. Participants will also be awarded 9 CEUs from Indian Hills Community College.
Next course date: Starts March 1, 2010 (12-week course runs 3/1/10 – 5/21/10)
The six modules will be taught over a 12-week period. After the completion of Module 6, all participants will spend a 3-day period at Indian Hills Community College (Ottumwa, Iowa), where they will have the opportunity to conduct all laboratory experiments included in the course and discuss with experienced instructors best practices for teaching the materials. The laboratory session will be scheduled for June 17-19, 2010.

In 2009, more than 20,000 people from across the globe are expected to converge in Atlanta, Ga. on May 18-21 to attend the global event for biotechnology.

Stipend Opportunity
The workshop is an NSF-grant funded activity; therefore, there are a limited number of stipends available to offset travel expenses. There will be a stipend of $100 per day (May 10TH and 11th) for the first 65 registrants! Madison Area Technical College is once again pleased to offer Renewable Energy for International Development in May of 2010. This is a 3-credit course that will combine 10 days of field work in Costa Rica with 8 weeks of additional online instruction. The course will be taught by faculty
from MATC and Solar Energy International. The college welcomes
participants from schools and organizations nationwide. All interested individuals are encouraged to apply, and special efforts will be made to assist newcomers to renewable energy and first time international travelers.
The May class will include hands-on installation of a small scale
anaerobic digestion bio-gas system, as well as a small solar electric system. Additional tours and inspections of wind and hydropower installations may be included as time permits. Additional details on the course are included in the attached pdf files. If you are interested in registering for the course, we encourage that you do so quickly since the number of available spaces is limited. Registration for the course is already underway.

Presenter: Charles Giglia has been in the field of computer forensics since 2000 concentrating primarily on the research and development of computer forensic investigative techniques and training curriculum. Charles has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Canisius College and a graduate degree in forensic science from the University of New Haven.
Charles had been deployed nearly 18 months from 2007 to 2009 doing computer forensic investigations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom while serving as a U.S. Army Contractor in Baghdad. Previously he spent six years as Computer Crime Specialist with the NW3C while leading the development of numerous training classes. His primary concentrations were courses related to Internet investigations and Internet forensics.
Charles has been a guest presenter at the FBI training academy, as well as several IACIS, FACT, RCFG/GMU, HTCIA international/regional conferences and an adjunct professor at Fairmont State College. He is a Certified Forensic Computer Examiner (CFCE), an AccessData Certified Examiner (ACE), an EnCase Certified Examiner (EnCE) and a Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE).

The Washington State IT Futures Education Summit holds its annual one-day event free event at the Microsoft Corporate Conference Center, Redmond Washington. Technical and workforce development instructors across our state in discovered new and innovative ways to improve IT education. 1. Transforming Instruction with Problem Based Learning
This track leads you through the steps required to add problem-based learning to your classroom. You will prepare a course that uses tasks from our online library (http://elc.fhda.edu/faculty/scenarios.html) or create your own PBL tasks, find industry volunteers to visit your classroom, practice facilitating student groups, and design feedback and assessment items for different levels of student work.
2. iCourse Design
This track takes instructors through the process of rethinking their course for online delivery. You will learn how to modify what you are doing in the classroom to delivery it effectively online. Online learning is a different way of learning and participants will be taken through the process of process of shifting from traditional to online instruction.

This 5 day class introduces programming simple iPhone applications using Cocoa and Objective C. Students will learn basic Objective C concepts, iPhone programming basics, and use the SDK environment on Apple Macintosh computers with OS X as a development platform. Design concepts and programming tools will be integrated with an emphasis on developing and deploying iPhone applications.
Prerequisites: It is suggested that attendees have some background in Object Oriented programming languages such as Java, Ruby on Rails, Visual Basic.NET, C# or PHP.
Instructor: Eric Knapp has been a full time Information Technology instructor at Madison Area Technical College for over 8 years. He has taught Java, Ruby on Rails and PHP with MySQL at MATC and is the lead developer of JavaScript curriculum for the Programmer/Analyst Associate Degree program. Eric's background includes over 15 years of IT systems development experience, including web development work on major e-commerce sites.
