The 2011 Aspen Environment Forum presented by the Aspen Institute in partnership with National Geographic will provide a critical framework for committed voices to address a significant milestone: A global population of 7 billion and how to reconcile Earth’s finite resources with its ability to sustain our expanding human needs.
Starting a successful research program and doing scholarly work at a predominantly undergraduate institution poses unique challenges for a beginning faculty member. A goal of the institute is to give pre-tenured faculty the opportunity to learn from and discuss with experienced faculty how to establish and manage a research program with undergraduates. While at the institute, participants will also prepare plans for starting and/or advancing their individual research programs at their respective campuses. A range of topics will be covered during the institute, and the specific goals include ways to achieve career success in undergraduate research by learning how to:
• select undergraduate researchers
• mentor student researchers and develop and use their research skills
• time management - balancing teaching, research and service activities
• develop and select research projects appropriate for undergraduates
• adapt to an undergraduate research environment vs. that in graduate school
• link research to the classroom and develop grantsmanship skills related to gaining external
and institutional research support

The theme for JCDL 2011 is "Digital Libraries: Bringing Together Scholars, Scholarship and Research Data", in recognition of the changes the digital age is now bringing to scholarship, broadly writ. Publishing models are changing, along with the breadth of digital material that must be managed coherently in the context of users forcing the move from information silos to a landscape of interconnected systems supporting scholarship for both research and education. Additionally in a number of disciplines we are seeing funding agency directives to include with primary scholarship those materials on which the scholarship is based such as data sets both in the sciences and humanities. Further, we are seeing more focus on requirements for managing data for use in the future by other scholars.
Students begin the Academy for College Excellence (ACE) semester with a two-week intensive called the Foundation Course. The FELI is a compressed, modified version of the Foundation Course exclusively for community college faculty, administrators and staff. During this workshop, participants are exposed to all of the same basic communication and leadership curriculum as ACE students, and often experience similar renewal and inspiration. The FELI offers the opportunity to enrich one's self both personally & professionally, and is an excellent way to be introduced to ACE. This FELI is the first step for faculty interested in teaching ACE courses.

This is an experiential workshop, meaning that you will be participating as a learner, not as an instructor learning to teach ACE curriculum.
The workshop is being held Monday, June 13 – Friday, June 17, 2011, 8:30am-5:30pm daily, at Cabrillo College, CA. This may sound like a long workshop, but many exercises get you out of your seat, and there are ample breaks. Because each exercise builds on the next, and rapport is built within the group, participants are asked to attend each day in full. Session groups are capped at around 25 participants.
Why Attend
Improve your connection with students & colleagues
Experience ACE curriculum
Take the first step to becoming an ACE instructor
Gain new skills
Renew yourself professionally
Get back in touch with why you became involved with education
Agenda
In this workshop, you will be exposed to core ACE curriculum and exercises within the theme of ‘re-conceptualizing the community college’. Major components include:
Laws of communication
Listening techniques
Identifying the working & communication styles of self and others
Learning how to construct & participate in a cohesive work team
Reflection techniques
For those who are interested, information about how to become an ACE instructor will also be shared.
For more information click here.
