This online course is being offered at no charge to U.S. high school, community college and technical college faculty interested in teaching a basic photonics course. The course will cover OP-TEC's Fundamentals of Light and Lasers. Modules Include: Nature and Properties of Light, Optical Handling and Positioning, Light Sources and Laser Safety, Basic Geometrical Optics, Basic Physical Optics, and Principles of Lasers.

After successful completion of all six modules by May 31, 2014, participants will spend a 3-day Capstone Laboratory Experience at an OP-TEC partner college where they will have the opportunity to conduct laboratory experiments included in the course and discuss with experienced instructors best practices for teaching the materials.

The online curriculum is culled from the four National Science Foundation (NSF) projects and over 18 years of success in assisting educational institutions in recruiting and retaining female students in programs around the country. Attendees will learn about gender diversity in STEM, keeping STEM students on course, and addressing the challenge of appealing to women who aren't excited by STEM. Presentations, handouts, and exercises are available online to watch and complete at each participants' convenience each week.

The course involves 5 weeks for recruitment training (Oct 7-Nov 1), followed by 5 weeks for retention training (Nov 9-Dec 6).

This six-week online course uses a series of online presentations, webinars, topic resources, assignments, and quizzes to teach the basics of solar electric systems. Participants will learn how photovoltaic (PV) systems work, diagram the four PV system types, describe and identify components, understand the best application and limitations of each system type, define the solar window, make energy efficiency recommendations, estimate system loads, and understand the basics of PV site assessment.

This course is an online course and will require participants to attend an online webinar for each week of the course.

Participants in this four-week online course will learn how to perform a PV site assessment for a home or small business. The course will cover site assessment tools, load analysis, energy efficiency recommendations, array placement options, basic system sizing, cost estimates, and evaluating existing infrastructure on site. Participants will learn how to access online tools for solar resource analysis, PV system performance calculators, and incentives.

This course is an online course and will require participants to attend an online webinar for each week of the course.

To receive the MREA PV Site Assessor Certificate, participants will need to complete this course, two practice site assessments, pass the written test, and pay a $50 exam fee.

The Spatial Plexus '13 international conference takes a twist on this paradigm bybringing problems to the practitioner and educator through the reality of intricate and interdependent issues. "Wicked problems" are those difficult to solve because of incomplete, contradictory, and changing requirements. By "inspecting 'wicked problems' with geospatial goggles," complexities and interdependencies can be exposed, better defined, dissected, better managed through the geospatial approach and reassembled for overall improvements.

Spatial Plexus creates an environment for the following:

  • Issue connectivity
  • Issue interconnectivity (i.e., Educational articulation, sustainable programs and spatial literacy for workforce readiness followed by GIS 4 domain of knowledge panels, to include Health, Public Safety, Sustaining the Built Environment and many other issues)
  • Dynamic interaction (i.e., Overview of issues by Keynote speakers and/or panelists, followed by audience discussion and the opportunity to further contribute to issues and issue interdependencies via Open Mike and Ignite sessions)
  • Hands-On workshops
  • Information from federal agency leads about GIS funding opportunities

"Wicked problems," such as education and business intelligence, require a great number of people to change their mindsets.

Recent physics education research (PER) data indicates microcomputer-based laboratory (MBL) tools coupled with an activity-based physics approach provides a better method of teaching physics by enabling the teaching/learning process to build on students’ direct experiences in the physics classroom/laboratory or studio. These MBL tools give students immediate feedback by presenting data graphically in a manner that can be easily and quickly understood. They will explore approaches and curriculum materials from commercial vendors (and leader developed labs) as well as hardware, software, and sensors from Vernier Software (LabPro/LabQuest Interface and Logger Pro software), PASCO Scientific, and Tracker software. These curriculum materials are often used with sensors and interfaces from other vendors as well.
