This online course is being offered at no charge to U.S. high school, community college and technical college faculty interested in teaching a basic photonics course. The course will cover OP-TEC's Fundamentals of Light and Lasers. Modules Include: Nature and Properties of Light, Optical Handling and Positioning, Light Sources and Laser Safety, Basic Geometrical Optics, Basic Physical Optics, and Principles of Lasers.

After successful completion of all six modules by May 31, 2014, participants will spend a 3-day Capstone Laboratory Experience at an OP-TEC partner college where they will have the opportunity to conduct laboratory experiments included in the course and discuss with experienced instructors best practices for teaching the materials.

Participants in this course will learn to effectively reference and use the National Electrical Code (NEC) with regard to the installation of small wind energy systems, and to properly size conductors, overcurrent protection, and associated equipment for grid interactive and battery-based systems. Many of the calculations and processes in this course align with the Job Task Analysis for the NABCEP Small Wind Installer Certification.

This symposium will focus on evidence-based practices that support the development and growth of comprehensive undergraduate research programs and curricula. Participants will work with colleagues from other institutions to craft practical strategies related to the following themes:

1. Connecting undergraduate research to the curriculum;
2. Mentor support and development;
3. Enhancing and evaluating student outcomes.

The program for the day will include brief keynote addresses, poster sessions around each of the three themes, and table discussions. We will conclude with a discussion on how to foster international conversations on undergraduate research.

SACNAS is a society of scientists dedicated to fostering the success of Hispanic/Chicano and Native American scientists in science. The SACNAS National Conference showcases cutting-edge science and features mentoring and training sessions for students and professionals at all levels in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.

FLATE is looking for manufacturers, industry associations, students, schools and communities to partner with us on Manufacturing Day 2013 (Oct 4). Their goal is to have at least 200 “Made in Florida” industry tours across the state on Oct 4. "Made in Florida" tours can dispel outdated myths about manufacturing, tell the company's story, connect with potential customers, and inspire a new generation of manufacturers.

As community colleges redesign and retrofit campuses in greener ways, institutions can use these projects as hands-on learning opportunities for students. These so-called “living laboratories” merge academics and campus facilities management to provide students with real-world skills and, for the institution, a path to meet its sustainability goals. The American Association of Community Colleges’ SEED Center, St. Clair County Community College, the BEST Center, and Siemens Industry Inc. are hosting a national workshop to help colleges build successful living laboratory initiatives. National best practice colleges and experts will address some of the biggest challenges, from student safety to engaging industry in curriculum development. The summit will be designed for faculty, deans, sustainability officers, and facilities directors. It will be a highly participatory deep dive into how these initiatives work and can work better. The Great Lakes Fuel Cell Education Partnership and Kettering University will host the NSF Energy Education Forum on October 5, 2012 at Mott Community College in Flint MI. The event will bring top industry and academic experts together to share their knowledge on alternative energy with a special focus on the progress of fuel cell development. This forum is designed to engage multiple audiences, including education professionals, industry leaders and students from both high school and post-secondary institutions. The Forum will include displays and activities such as a static display of various fuel cell vehicles and a GM Volt hybrid vehicle, fuel cell car and hydrogen bus rides, tour of Swedish Bio Gas Production facility using waste water for gas production and hands-on activities for students.

OSA's Annual Meeting, Frontiers in Optics 2013, is being held in Orlando, FL, USA, the first stop of a 3 year road trip that also includes Tuscon, San Jose, and Rochester as we count down to OSA's 100th Anniversary celebration. Collocated with the American Physical Society Division of Laser Science’s annual meeting, Laser Science XXIX, FiO/LS features more than 900 presentations–covering the latest advances in all areas of optics and photonics – from adaptive optics and optical sensing to silicon photonics and quantum information science. The FiO Exhibit, held 8-9 October, hosts more than 80 participating companies and industry leaders.

The online curriculum is culled from the four National Science Foundation (NSF) projects and over 18 years of success in assisting educational institutions in recruiting and retaining female students in programs around the country. Attendees will learn about gender diversity in STEM, keeping STEM students on course, and addressing the challenge of appealing to women who aren't excited by STEM. Presentations, handouts, and exercises are available online to watch and complete at each participants' convenience each week.

The course involves 5 weeks for recruitment training (Oct 7-Nov 1), followed by 5 weeks for retention training (Nov 9-Dec 6).

Please note: it does not matter which workshop is attended first. These workshops are designed for: post-secondary faculty and administrators.

Nanotechnology Course Resources I: Safety, Processing, and Materials. This workshop focuses on: Materials, Safety, and Equipment Overview, Basic Nanotechnology Processes, and Materials in Nanotechnology. Applicants who are accepted for the curriculum delivery workshops will be granted a fellowship to attend. ARM processors provide a simple platform for introducing microcontrollers in curriculum with a pathway ahead for large projects and life-long learning. This workshop cover topics related to MEMS pressure sensors. Topics include simple series and parallel electronic circuits, the series-parallel Wheatstone bridge circuit, strain gauges, how a MEMS pressure sensor works, its applications, and how it is fabricated. Activities include measuring resistance, voltage and current, comparing the resistivity characteristic of various materials, building a macro-sized pressure sensor, and testing your pressure sensor for changes in applied pressures. The course will cover site assessment tools, load analysis, energy efficiency recommendations, array placement options, basic system sizing, cost estimates, and evaluating existing infrastructure on site. Participants will learn how to access online tools for solar resource analysis, PV system performance calculators, and incentives.

This course is an online course and will require participants to attend an online webinar for each week of the course.

To receive the MREA PV Site Assessor Certificate, participants will need to complete this course, two practice site assessments, pass the written test, and pay a $50 exam fee.

Collaborating with 12 community colleges and Bio-Link, the DNA Learning Center is offering week-long Genomic Approaches in BioSciences workshops. Workshop participants will utilize cutting-edge science tools in hands-on laboratories and bioinformatics investigations, and deepen awareness of rewarding careers for their students. Participants will update their pedagogy while networking with biotech leaders and colleagues. A continuum of faculty from secondary education, 2-year colleges, and universities are invited to apply. The National Science Foundation, Division of Undergraduate Education’s Advanced Technological Education (NSF-ATE) program is funding all instruction, workshop materials, meals/refreshments, and a stipend of $300. Further support for travel or other related expenses is not available.

The Genomic Approaches in BioSciences workshops will focus on four key technologies - PCR, DNA Sequencing, RNA interference, and Bioinformatics - that will prepare students for specialized life science elective courses, independent research projects, and biotechnology careers.

Genomic Approaches in BioSciences will integrate theoretical, laboratory, and computer technology with practical advice on classroom management and career exploration. Time will be included for independent work, lesson planning, and preparation for classroom projects. Each workshop is led by DNALC staff members and college faculty who collaborated in the development of the course modules.

In addition there will be a keynote speaker and several panelists from local industry who will share their observations and experiences within their respective fields. All of the panelists would love for students to come with questions. In addition to great information and knowledgeable speakers, there will be fun give-a-ways and students will have an opportunity to speak with the panelists after the event.

This workshop covers many topics related to the DNA microarray. Topics include DNA transcription, DNA hybridization, DNA microarray types, applications, fabrication and interpretation. The SCME GeneChip model kit is used to give participants the experience of simulating the fabrication process, an application process, and interpreting a microarray's results. Additional activities reinforce the understand of DNA transcription and hybridization.

A short course and workshop coordinated by Eric Baer and Robert H. Blodgett, co-sponsored by NAGT and COSEE, and part of the SAGE 2YC project which is funded by the National Science Foundation. This course will be from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturday, October 26, 2013 in Denver, CO. This workshop will bring together 2YC faculty and other educators to share successful approaches, strategies, and programs for working with all students, both in and outside the classroom. Participants will learn how recent research on student learning, group interaction, and instruction can help support student success. Because no two 2YCs are alike, the workshop will address a range of research-supported techniques and strategies for adaptation to local needs.

If you would like to attend the course, you must register and pay a fee through the The Geological Society of America; Fees vary depending on whether you attend the Annual Meeting and Exposition which immediately follows the course or will attend the workshop as a stand-alone event. Your registration fee includes a boxed lunch.

The Community of Practice (CoP) is an opportunity for the ACE community to come together to exchange ideas and learn from one another. It is a day when ACE instructors and implementers can share their innovations around every aspect of the program; from recruiting students, to teaching, or institutionalizing ACE at a college. The goal is to not only build community and share knowledge, but also to capture great ideas to further strengthen this program and better help our students. The CoP is open to anyone interested in ACE.
