Concrete Masonry Technology covers material grading and blending, cementitious material, lightweight aggregates, design mix development, admixes, pigments and the producing and curing of concrete masonry units. Concrete masonry specifications and the multiple uses of products are covered. Course presentations are directed toward the material suppliers and the producers of concrete masonry units. Students are encouraged to bring samples of their own aggregates to test after class.

Winning Cyberlearning proposals take the reader through a compelling line of argument that begins with a national need and ends with a strong set of project goals and objectives. Learn, from Robert Tinker of Concord Consortium, how to build an engaging and effective cyberlearning rationale that makes a strong, clear and convincing argument.

Proposal reviewers have a deep understanding of what a winning proposal looks like. Guy-Alain Amoussau will share what an experienced proposal reviewer looks for in a winning proposal.

This 1.5 day workshop of lectures and hands-on lab exercises will be held in Southern Oregon's world-renown wine region utilizing Dr. Barry Gump's 30 years of experience in chemistry, brewing, and wine analysis. Dr. Gump will guide winemakers, enologists, lab assistants, etc., through the analyses and lab techniques necessary for a well-functioning wine lab. Dr. Gump literally wrote the book on this topic.

The Vibrapac concrete products machine course is a hands-on study of the proper machine adjustments, electronics and electrical schematic print reading of the V3 Vibrapac concrete products machines. Students are given troubleshooting problems as a practical application of these topics.

If you are FACULTY at a credit-bearing institution, this course is FREE-OF-CHARGE.

If you are faculty at a NON-credit-bearing institution, this course is $500. Your payment MUST be received upon registration or you will automatically be taken off the course roster.

Using unique methodology for a complex industry, the COE, the California Community Colleges Life Sciences/Biotechnology Initiative and Bio-Link, the NSF/ATE Center at City College of San Francisco formed a team to obtain authentic, actionable labor market information and conduct a gap analysis for Middle Skills Jobs. The study confirms that six Middle Skills occupations are significant to the Life Sciences/Biotechnology sector, with over 17,000 current jobs and 4,700 job openings projected over the next five years. The community colleges provide important training for these jobs, but might need to expand their capacity and align programs to meet employer demands.

Learn more about communicating with policy makers from Phil Harman (Director, Congressional Relations, SRI). Interested in sharing information about your project with legislators? What type of information do they want from you? How can you create information packages that they will read and use? NSF PIs will share their experiences helping legislators learn more about NSF funded projects in their districts.

This workshop will provide an opportunity to get in on the ground floor in educating technicians for one of the most exciting and fastest growing technologies - PHOTONICS!

Optics and photonics applications are rapidly transforming the way we work and live. Photonics, and its applications, involve the cutting-edge use of lasers, optics, fiber-optics, sensors, cameras, and electro-optical devices. Photonics has many applications in manufacturing, medicine, aerospace, communications, security, solid-state lighting, and other high-tech fields. Thus it represents a broad, commercially viable area in which American employers require a steady supply of well-qualified technicians.

This regional national workshop is targeted to community and technical college faculty, staff, and administrators, as well as industry/workforce trainers. While this workshop will be focused on photonics in the Northeast/New England region, the concepts will be applicable and interesting to educators nationwide. Participants will be provided information on the growing need for photonics technicians and postsecondary programs to educate them. OP-TEC staff will explain the opportunities for attendees to create new AAS programs in photonics and/or to infuse optics and photonics instruction into existing technical programs in technologies that are enabled by photonics. Attendees will also learn about OP-TEC materials and services available for planning and implementing photonics education at their institutions

The Common Guidelines for Education Research and Development (http://bit.ly/nsf-ies_guide) define the National Science Foundation’s and Department of Education’s shared understanding and expectations regarding types of research and development projects funded by these agencies. Issued in 2013, these guidelines represent a major step toward clarifying and unifying the NSF’s and Department of Education’s policies regarding research and development, particularly with regard to different types of research and development projects and the nature of evidence needed for each type. This webinar will provide an orientation to these relatively new guidelines; clarify the distinctions between research, development, and evaluation; and learn about targeted research within NSF’s Advanced Technological Education program.

Working Connections IT Faculty Development Institute offers cutting-edge, cost-effective professional development opportunities to current community college IT/convergence faculty that is often only available through expensive commercial training. Working Connections makes the newest technologies and industry trends available to attendees, as well as encourages the kind of networking and collaboration among educational and business leaders that can strengthen any IT educational program.

Working Connections training workshops offer several tracks that cover a range of the most in-demand topics in IT. The goal of Working Connections is to provide attendees with the expertise needed to teach their respective track in a subsequent semester, bringing the most current information to their classrooms either as a stand-alone course or as supplemental information to an existing course.

Since 2004, more than 875 faculty members have attended the National Convergence Technology Center's Working Connections training. In the past four years, 81% of the faculty chose a discipline that they were not currently teaching, leading to 159 new degrees, certificates, or courses created and implemented using the training provided. By the National CTC's calculations, over 37,600 students and faculty have been impacted by the training provided by Summer and Winter Working Connections training since 2004.

Through its National Integrated Cyber Education Research Center, the Cyber Innovation Center is hosting a STEM EDA workshop for middle school teachers on December 18, 2014, 8am-5pm at Cal State San Bernardino.

STEM: Explore, Discover, Apply (STEM EDA) engages middle school students through a series of hands-on projects that help improve their problem-solving and critical thinking skills. All projects seamlessly integrate the Engineering Design Process which allows students to creatively explore STEM through design.

This multi-grade level curricula utilizes liberal arts disciplines to provide meaning and depth to the content. Through STEM EDA, students develop invaluable skills focusing on leadership, team building, creativity, and communication.

STEM EDA's modular nature provides ultimate flexibility to schools. Teachers can implement the curricula as a standalone elective course, insert specific modules into and existing class, or provide the modules as an after school program.
