Additive Manufacturing, also known as 3D printing or Rapid Prototyping, is used by industries, entrepreneurs and inventors across the US, and the SiMT has the first (and currently only) commercially available Direct to Metals Laser Sintering (DMLS) machine in the region! Join us to hear from industry leaders and subject matter experts in the emerging field of Additive Manufacturing. Who should attend? * Medical: Orthopedics and Orthotics; Research University Technology Transfer Offices; Medical Device Research, Development and Manufacturing; and Materials Research * Aerospace and Defense: Tier 1 Suppliers; Manufacturers; and Research and Development * Automotive and NASCAR: Manufacturers and Suppliers; Research and Development * Educators: Engage students and ignite creativity * Other topics: Intellectual Property Implications; Grant and Venture Capital Funding; and Networking towards the development of future partnerships

Energy! Safety! Emissions! The economic and societal impact of the automotive industry on these issues is vast. Automotive technology is changing rapidly in response to these concerns. Is your curriculum preparing students to be ready to work in these advanced technologies?

The subject of this webinar, presented by the Center for Advanced Automotive Technology (CAAT), is how CAAT can support keeping your automotive, electronics, and IT curricula up-to-date. CAAT’s recent renewal through 2017 as an National Science Foundation (NSF) Advanced Technological Education (ATE) Center includes changes in its technical scope, adding new technologies: vehicle lightweight design and automated vehicles. The CAAT will continue also to focus on vehicle electrification and propulsion systems. The webinar will include highlights from the 2014 CAAT Conference, held earlier this year, which addressed the future of automotive technology as presented by several well-known industry experts. These presentations documented the need for improved curricula in these technical areas.

As part of the webinar, we will be soliciting proposals to apply for the additional seed funding. The CAAT now controls to develop curricula in these subjects. The seed funding portion of the agenda will include brief presentations from two current seed funding project developers so that potential applicants can understand better the types of projects suitable for seed funding support.

Join current and alumni AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellows as they explore the science policy arena through projects from academia, government, industry, nonprofit organizations, and the arts. Participants have challenged themselves to think visually: each will present 20 images for only 20 seconds each.

Following the presentations will be a science policy open house and networking reception with representatives from various AAAS programs, partner scientific societies, science policy agencies, and organizations. Exhibit tabling will begin at 5:30 p.m. and continue during the reception after the presentations. Join us in this exciting, fast-paced evening of compelling issues and discussion! Sponsored by AAAS.

This workshop will cover the teaching of three courses out of the six course suite: Patterning for Nanotechnology; Materials Modification for Nanotechnology Applications; and, Characterization, Testing of Nanotechnology Structures and Materials.

The workshop uses the National Nanotechnology Applications and Career Knowledge (NACK) class notes and the corresponding set of labs. The workshop will also cover the strategies for the conducting of the NACK-provided labs for the courses. The workshop will also discuss the equipment needs for the labs, equipment costs, and sustaining costs.

This workshop is a continuation of Nanotechnology Course Resources I, although it does not matter in which order the workshops get completed.

Learn how to increase the number of female students in your science and technology classrooms. The online training, about 3 hours per week for 10 weeks, is given via presentations, handouts and exercises online, available to watch and complete at your convenience. Plus you'll receive exclusive access to an online learning community to connect with other training participants and receive supplementary content.

You will take away an easy-to-implement recruitment plan to greatly increase the number of women and girls in your STEM classrooms; a retention plan for your school to increase the completion rate of your female (and male students), starting right away; and the knowledge and confidence you need to put your plans into action.

You can also attend the online training in a team. Your team will be the most effective if it includes a variety of stakeholders from your school or program who are dedicated to increasing the number of female students in STEM. Teams should have between 4-10 members. The more people that you can get involved in this campaign, the more lasting change you're going to have. Ideally, an administrator, dean, department chair, or technology center director will act as key leader and an instructor from the targeted program will act as co-leader.

In today's work environment, it doesn't pay to sit still. Keeping your skills sharp can make the difference between moving ahead and becoming stale or even obsolete. Learn from the best minds in the profession and take your skills to the next level by attending the URISA Leadership Academy.

The entire five day program, the only leadership training program of its type, is tailored to industry leaders and practitioners faced with unique challenges of GIS leadership and management and who want to make an impact leveraging the power of GIS.

The success of any GIS program is largely tied to the capabilities of its leader. Strong leadership is necessary to establish a solid GIS program, operate efficiently and effectively, coordinate participants, adapt to change, and move a program forward. Leadership, however, is a skill that must be developed. The URISA Leadership Academy was established to meet this need. Participants will learn:

  • GIS leadership and management techniques
  • Strategic planning
  • Successful team development
  • Organizational capacity building and sustainability strategies (ROI, innovative funding ideas)
  • Program investment and justification
  • Change management
  • Situation assessment and organizational performance evaluation
  • Ethics and professional challenges
  • Problem solving

The ULA is taught by proven leaders in the profession (all are GISPs and accomplished in the field). Each course will include numerous interactive exercises, team-building tools, and opportunities to delve into topics in a way you cannot do at a large conference. (Note that course attendance is limited in size to encourage such interaction...so register early to reserve your spot.)
