The WorkBoat Annual Conference takes place alongside the International WorkBoat Show. The conference runs Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with breaks in between sessions to explore the exhibit hall, catch up with colleagues, check your email, or grab a quick bite to eat.
Attend the sessions to get up to speed on the topics that matter most to you, curated by the content and editorial team at WorkBoat (WorkBoat.com, WorkBoat Magazine, and the International WorkBoat Show) and is delivered by the leaders in the maritime industry. This year's conference will feature sessions on Safety, Technical, Legal and Regulatory, and Business Management practices.

Twenty years ago, scientist-turned-filmmaker Randy Olson left his tenured professorship of marine biology for Hollywood. He had a single goal — the search for something that might improve the communication of science. He found it in a narrative template he crafted and labeled as “The ABT.” The ABT is adapted from the co-creators of the Emmy and Peabody award-winning animated series, South Park. In a 2011 documentary about the show, they talked about their “Rule of Replacing” which they use for editing scripts. Their rule involves replacing the word “and” with “but” or “therefore." From this Olson devised his “And, But, Therefore” template (the ABT). This has become the central tool for his new book, “Houston, We Have A Narrative,” his work with individual scientists, and his Story Circles Narrative Training program he has been developing over the past year with NIH and USDA. In this webinar, co-sponsored by the Society for Conservation Biology and the American Geophysical Union/AGU's Sharing Science program, he will present what he has termed “The ABT Framework” which refers to “the ABT way of thinking.” He will tell about how he has expanded it into The Narrative Spectrum, present examples of it working with scientists, and talk about the universal importance of narrative structure.

Science, Religion, and Art will often intersect. Artists find inspiration from religious sources, religions draw on art to convey theological ideas, and science frequently uses art to render abstract concepts tangible, while artists aspire to the elegance found in nature. Sometimes these three modes of engaging with the world combine at once, such as when mathematical equations or the patterns found in nature become elegant works of art. At this year's annual holiday lecture, our speakers will explore the rich ways in which science, religion and art intersect.

Come and shine bright with NSTA at our third and final 2015 Fall Area Conference in Kansas City, Missouri. Like the Power and Light District in downtown Kansas City, our exhibit hall is the place to come and shine a light on your organization’s latest and greatest products and services. Surveys show that over 50% of our attendees spend three or more hours walking our exhibit hall floor. That’s hours upon hours for you to interact and engage these educators. Each one after all is either a returning customer or a potential new one.

The Brown Bag Lunch Series draws from the knowledge and expertise of Westshore faculty members within the social sciences, humanities and physical sciences.

During this Brown Bag Lunch, attendees will learn how to use powerful mental tools to help master tough subjects, learn invaluable learning techniques used by experts in art, music, literature, math, science, sports, and many other disciplines, and learn about the how the brain uses two very different learning modes and how it encapsulates (“chunks”) information.

Join our distinguished faculty member Todd Williams as he shares his rich experiences while addressing topics of current interest. The series is designed to bring the Westshore college community – and the community-at-large - together to discuss timely and diverse topics in a casual interactive setting.

The founding women of this program believe that women in leadership roles have a desire and obligation to demonstrate leadership behaviors to their peers. In addition, we believe women leaders have a responsibility to assist in the development of leadership behaviors in their colleagues. Finally, we believe in creating a culture of courageous leaders; these leaders are the backbone of sustainable organizations.

What do the scientists who pioneered forensic DNA testing and human trafficking scholars think should be done to identify the thousands of unaccompanied migrant children crossing into the U.S. from Latin America? With firsthand accounts from immigrants who crossed as children and who were kidnapped, stripped naked, smuggled in with coyotes and crossed through the desert, we see the human side of the complex problems of identifying the dead and preventing human trafficking.

Mark S. Frankel (AAAS) will give opening remarks. The film will be followed by a discussion panel, moderated by Jessica Wyndham (AAAS), and a light reception.

Every year, workforce development professionals from Virginia's Community Colleges, workforce investment areas and partner agencies, legislators, economic developers and business leaders gather for the Hire Education Conference to explore, share and discuss trends, best practices and strategies for improving Virginia's workforce system.

The retrospective pre-post self-assessment method for evaluating training and professional development effectiveness prompts participants to rate their knowledge and ability related to training content before and after a training activity. This is a great tool to use for evaluating training effectiveness. The participant does the self-assessment one time at the end of the training rather than both at the beginning and the end. This approach provides a sound and consistent measure of participant growth that can be used across training activities. Adult learners tend to be more accepting of this assessment method than traditional knowledge tests, and it eliminates the threat of response-shift bias associated with traditional pre-post self-assessments.

To accommodate the needs for high detection accuracy and high throughput in a measurement system, Dr. Sakairi and his group have been developing real-time mass spectrometry (RTM) and have deployed and implemented it in environmental measurement systems and physical security systems. Japanese Customs uses the physical security systems in inspection areas to detect smuggling of explosives and illegal drugs. Although advancements in physical measurement technologies have led to the birth of a giant industry, we have now almost reached their performance limits. Now research is moving toward creating a measurement technology modeled after the olfactory system of living organisms for accurately recognizing and distinguishing a vast array of odorant molecules.

Cultural heritage is the physical manifestation of a people’s history and forms an important part of their identity. Deliberate heritage destruction, which attempts to remove all traces of the past, is often used as a tool of ethnic and sectarian violence. Unfortunately, this type of damage is an ongoing part of the conflict in Syria, Iraq, and elsewhere across the globe. It constitutes an established human rights violation. In addition, archaeological site looting during periods of social and political unrest causes extensive damage to ancient centers. Scientific methods and technological tools can be employed to document, investigate, and ultimately understand heritage loss in order to create more effective humanitarian and policy responses and to develop preventative measures. This exhibition highlights cutting-edge scientific methods, new technologies, and current research projects that are underway to reveal this cultural tragedy.

The Developmental Math Demonstration Project, supported by Lumina Foundation, aimed to transform developmental math instructional pedagogy and improve student outcomes through the use of open educational resources (i.e. Khan Academy). Through the project, over 25 math faculty in 13 New England community college classrooms have tested free Khan Academy learning resources with more than 1,000 students over the last three years.

At this intimate, discussion-driven conference, you will hear candidly from college faculty, community college administrators, and the project team on what worked and what did not work. We will review the case for developmental math reform, share what we learned about implementing Khan Academy in developmental math classrooms, and review the role of institutional leaders in supporting instructional innovations.

Working Connections training workshops offer several tracks that cover a range of the most in-demand topics in IT. The goal of Working Connections is to provide attendees with the expertise needed to teach their respective track in a subsequent semester, bringing the most current information to their classrooms either as a stand-alone course or as supplemental information to an existing course.

Last month, Johns Hopkins School of Education and NAPE released the report Solving the Education Equation calling for a national commitment to increasing the diversity of the STEM workforce. Developed by a coalition of educators, businesses, nonprofits, and civil rights groups, the report emphasizes the critical role that equitable learning environments play in insuring that teaching and learning are relevant and connect meaningfully to STEM literacy and competency. This webinar brings together members of the coalition to review the reports principles and create a call to action to include equity as central to the education reform policy and practice discussion.
