The 16th Annual Conference on Information Technology Education and the 4th Annual Conference on Research in Information Technology (RIIT) will be hosted by DePaul University and will take place at the DePaul Loop campus September 30 – October 3, 2015. Both conferences are sponsored by the ACM Special Interest Group of Information Technology Education (SIGITE).

The theme of both conferences is “Creating the Future”. The Chicago fire of 1871 enabled a rebirth of development in Chicago, producing notable architecture that continues to impact the city into the present day. In a nod to that period of development, a technology-focused incubator called 1871 has been created, and with it has come a focus on reinventing Chicago for the next century. Industry, academic, and political leaders are working to make Chicago a city known for its innovative approaches to business and technology.

In 2006 the Chinese government launched its National Medium- and Long-Term Plan for the Development of Science and Technology 2006-2020, making “indigenous innovation” the top developmental priority. The broad goal of the MLP is to transform China into a technology-focused economy by 2020 and a global leader in R&D, science, and product innovation by 2050.  Can such state-driven efforts succeed? At first glance, the results of China’s efforts are impressive. Yet China’s investment in research and development has yet to pay off in product innovation. Moreover, President Xi’s “Chinese dream,” which includes a major anti-corruption campaign along with reigning in “Western thinking” in China’s universities, may have a deleterious effect on China’s high-tech ambitions. This presentation will explore these ambitions in light of recent developments in China.

This complimentary event is open to business professionals, entrepreneurs, inventors, students, teachers and 'creative souls'.

The key finding from an evaluation was that while female mathematics students improved their final marks in response to attending a greater number of sessions per semester, male students achieved lower final marks on average.  Although several studies have shown that in PASS-like programs gender tends to not be a significant factor relating to achievement, our results suggest otherwise.  We presented our work and speculated on the reasons for this observation at the Australasian Conference for PASS and Peer-Learning in Melbourne, Australia in September 2015, and sought suggestions on how programs like PASS could address this gender-specific difference in achievement.  This Webinar will present our research and discuss approaches to remediate gender-associated differences in achievement.

In an era of profound transformation, what does it mean to be a learner-centered college or university?

Today’s learners grew up with the Internet, with on-demand and instant results delivered to a hand-held device. They increasingly judge colleges by return-on-investment. Many students are nontraditional: 40% are age 25 or older; 20% work full-time; 60% study at four-year public or private HEIs, while most of the rest attend community colleges or for-profit colleges. They are more ethnically diverse than earlier generations of students. Some are privileged; some are poor.

NEBHE invites you to join thought leaders including State University of New York Chancellor Nancy Zimpher, Institute for Academic Leadership Director Lawrence G. Abele, Public Agenda Sr. Vice President of Higher Education and Workforce Development Alison Kadlec; CUNY University Dean for Student Success Initiatives Donna Linderman; Columbia University Community College Research Center Director Thomas Bailey; Complete College America Vice President of Strategy Julie Johnson; Inside Higher Ed co-founder Scott Jaschik and Big Picture Learning co-founder Dennis Littky for a compelling discussion of Learner-Centered Institutions: The Future of Higher Education.

The course is intended for quantitatively-minded scientists who wish to analyse spatially explicit line transect distance sampling data. In particular we envisage graduate students/postdocs/faculty in applied ecology, government/industry scientists and wildlife managers amongst the participants. Although the main examples in the course will be in a marine setting, the methodology and software demonstrated are equally applicable to terrestrial situations.

The workshop will cover both theory and practice and demonstrate an end-to-end workflow for spatial modelling of distance sampling data collected via line transect surveys.

Scientists often cite Isaac Newton when crediting the work of others who have come before them:  If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants. Who are those “giants”?  We know they are not limited to the sciences.  Music has them. So does art.  As well as literature.   Do these giants possess the characteristics of genius and creativity in larger doses than the rest of us?  What makes a genius?  Why are some people so much more creative than others?  How do people “become” creative or a genius?  What influence do brain and environment have in developing and nurturing genius or creativity?  These and other questions are the focus of this public event.  Speakers will address circumstances necessary to produce a cultural environment that nurtures creativity; the role of epiphanies in the creative thinking process; and how science can contribute to enhanced creativity.
