Teaching at Scale: Effective strategies for higher order learning in large courses

(7 days)

This workshop will facilitate discussion, exchange of information, and sharing of resource to improve teaching in education settings at scale – such as large online courses, blended courses, large lecture courses, MOOCs, and adaptive learning systems. During the workshop we will explore pedagogic topics that are especially relevant to effectively teaching large numbers of students. Examples include how to deliver content, integrating technology, effective learning activities, how to run effective scalable discussions, assessment strategies, and course management.

The workshop will include a series of web-based synchronous and asynchronous sessions, including presentations from expert practitioners of scaled learning, panel discussions, on-line chat sessions, and time for guided individual and small group work. A primary focus of the workshop will be the development of course components and teaching materials specifically designed for use in these teaching conditions. These materials will be published on the website for use by other faculty.

This workshop will take place April 9-11 and April 14-15, 2014. Cost is $200. Applications must be submitted by 02/15/2014.

Grape Planting Workshop

Somerset Ridge Vineyard and Winery is hosting Kansas Grape Growers and Winemakers Association and Highland Community College for a grape planting field-day. The field day is scheduled for April 17th, and April 18th is reserved April 18th as the "rain date."

The Field Day will include a demonstration of vine planting utilizing a transplanter pulled behind a tractor which will increase the pace at which vines can be planted and decrease the manual labor required in the initial planting.

National Science Foundation Grant Opportunities for Community Colleges

This workshop covers a variety of topics related specifically to the micro and nano-scales. Topics include the history of weights and measures, the development of the metric system, unit conversions, and a comparison and exploration of the macro to the nano-scales. Activities include converting from metric to English and vice versa, solving mathematical calculations that apply to specific MEMS applications, working with objects ranging from the macro to the nano-scale, and exploring the use of a scanning electron microscope to “see” at the micro-scale.

Hands-on Introduction to Nanotechnology for Educators

This workshop presents an overview of nanotechnology. Participants will learn about the applications of nanotechnology in areas including biotechnology, MEMS, optoelectronics, chemical processing, solar cells, and information technologies. The basics of nanofabrication processes and tools will be covered and emphasized through processing labs held in the CNEU Teaching Cleanroom. This three-day workshop is broken down into daily lectures by Penn State researchers and engineering staff and into lab sessions in nanofabrication.
