How Can Geospatial âBig Dataâ Help Disaster Response and Track Disease Outbreaks?

This webinar will discuss the impacts of big data and social media from a geospatial technology perspective and introduce a few software solutions and examples for disease outbreak surveillance and disaster response/assistance. Two web applications developed by the Center of Human Dynamics in the Mobile Age (HDMA)  at San Diego State University will be introduced to demonstrate the value of geospatial big data. The web-based Social Media Analytics and Research Testbed (SMART) dashboard can provide real-time surveillance and trend analysis for various topics. SMART dashboard can be used to track multiple themes with various keywords, including disease outbreaks, drug abuse, regional wildfires in Southern California . The Geo-targeted Event Observation (GEO) Viewer is a Web-based mapping application which enable users to track real-time messages, pictures, and locations from GPS-tagged social media messages (Twitter) for disaster response and assistance efforts

EARLI 2015

(5 days) Cyprus University of TechnologyPavlou MelaLimassolCyprus

The theme of the EARLI 2015 conference is “Towards a Reflective Society: Synergies between Learning, Teaching and Research”.  The EARLI2015 theme addresses the emphases of the conference on research-based learning and instruction, while highlighting the crucial role of the systematic investigation of learning and teaching as a mechanism for promoting innovative and creative thinking and sustaining long-term societal growth.

Reflective citizenship lies at the heart of contemporary societies.  The 21st century calls for a redefinition of the forms of knowledge, skills and competences that are necessary for the advancement of our societies.  While the focus on basic skills and the need for disciplinary knowledge cannot be ignored, there is a need to work individually and collectively towards increasing the reflective capacity of our societies. This means that different stakeholders, such as learners of different ages and stages, teachers at all levels, and researchers need to focus on being reflective in their practices and need to synchronize efforts, so that we can all reach the ambitious goal for education as an integral and productive force of an innovative modern society.

And is it legal to collect data with them? What types of UAVs/UASs exist and what sensor payloads are the most popular for specific fields? Is there a permit needed for my agency or institution to fly UAVs/UASs? How do I process the resulting sensed data and use them in my GIS?

2015 GIS in Transit Conference

(3 days) Hamilton Crowne Plaza Hotel1001 14th St NW (14th & K)Washington DC20005

Managing data to drive decision making has never been more important.  As large data systems are capturing significant performance, operational and planning data in the transit industry.  These data can improve decision making, service evaluation, customer satisfaction, operational efficiency and overall system performance. At the core of many of these data are spatial elements, that describe the location of relevant transit data.  Transit boardings, customer location, activity centers, assets and transit service.  Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provides a unique platform for organizing, evaluating and communicating data; transforming data into information.  This conference will bring experts from around the country on how GIS is being used everyday to improve transit systems.  The conference will provide a breadth of GIS experiences to showcase how agencies of all sizes and budgets are managing its GIS data and improving transit service and ultimately customer service.

Using Carbon-14 to Investigate the Response of Natural Methane Emissions to Global Warming

Hutchison Hall, room 140500 Joseph C. Wilson BlvdRochesterNY

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas, and anthropogenic methane emissions are the second largest contributor to man-made global warming. Studies suggest that natural emissions of methane may increase in response to the warming, providing a significant positive feedback. Of particular concern are "old carbon" reservoirs, such as marine methane hydrates and permafrost. Both of these reservoirs are sensitive to warming and are large enough to increase the atmospheric methane concentration by an order of magnitude or more if a large fraction of the reservoir is destabilized. Our research group is testing the hypothesis that methane hydrates and / or permafrost can emit large amounts of methane to the atmosphere in response to warming. To test this hypothesis, we are studying the previous time the Earth had gone through a large global warming -- the last deglaciation, between about 10,000 and 20,000 years ago. We obtain large samples of ancient air from glacial ice cores and analyze the carbon-14 content of methane in this air to characterize the magnitude of methane emissions from old carbon sources. My talk will provide an introduction to ice cores as well as discuss our findings from methane C-14 measurements.
