The faculty and staff of Austin Community College Biotechnology Program are pleased to announce this exciting summer professional development opportunity designed for high-school and two-year college science and technical education instructors.  This year ACC has partnered with Madison College to bring their Stem Cell Education Initiative to Texas.   For the first time this nationally recognized Train-the-Trainer academy will travel outside of their home base of Madison, WI.

Designed for the CNC machining teacher with an operational understanding of a Haas 3-axis CNC mill as well as a working knowledge of 4th axis CNC milling, this class will include both theory and hands on lab time. The theory portion of the class will include rotational axis, types of 5-axis CNC mills, 5-axis set-up considerations, programming changes, program editing, and 3+2 long hand programming.

The lab portion of this class will include safety, 5-axis trunnion set-up, setting work offsets both manually and with a probe and tool setter, 5-axis work holding, tool clearance considerations, dry run techniques, and 5-axis machine operation. During the five-day course participants will have the opportunity to program, setup and run a total of four (4) 5-axis projects.

In Barcode Long Island, funded by the National Institutes of Health, student research teams use DNA barcoding to explore the unique biodiversity and ecology of Long Island.

First, science teachers attend summer training at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Stony Brook University, or Brookhaven National Lab. Then, trained teachers assemble student research teams in grades 9 to 12 and submit an original research proposal using our proposal submission guideline. Teams with accepted proposals will receive supplies, equipment, and scientific support needed to conduct experiments. Program data will contribute to a distributed effort to generate a "big picture" of Long Island's many ecosystems and diverse living things. Results will be shared at an annual symposium.

Participants will be introduced to sample collection and DNA barcoding wet-lab and bioinformatics infrastructure. Each workshop is 9:30 am to 3:30 pm and lunch will be provided. Teachers who complete this workshop are invited to organize student teams and propose projects. Accepted projects will be presented at the 2017 spring symposium.

The Institute is for high school students, teachers and counselors (grades 9-12) who want to learn about the many career choices and applications of the photonics industry, the skills required to be successful in photonics-enabled careers, TSTC’s Laser Electro-Optics degree program, and basic Laser and Optics principles.

Designed for Middle and High School STEM Teachers, Owensboro Community College offers a fun way to earn PD hours.  You'll learn how to incorporate STEM into your curriculum using hands-on automotive related activities along with learning about the high-tech transportation industry.  You'll learn about hybrid batteries along with building a batter using a kit that you can keep after words.  There is also the opportunity to participate in a propane vehicle conversion, apply geometry to TRAXXAS electric controlled car suspension system, and burn different fuels in an emissions demonstration.  Finally, you'll participate in a ride and drive event and earn a $125 stipend for your participation.

LASER-TEC is hosting two hands-on professional development workshops for North Carolina CTE educators on July 13, 2016. The educators will be introduced to the cutting edge technologies of lasers and fiber optics and their streamlined integration into existing CTE curriculum.

The purpose of this workshop is to introduce teachers to the online curriculum and provide teachers with hands-on biotechnology experience. It's designed to give science and technology high school teachers in the state of Texas an opportunity to obtain certification for teaching advanced biotechnology as a course for science credit. The online curriculum will provide teachers with an overview of the biotechnology field and an introduction to the latest information and discoveries in biotechnology.Participants will learn about the tools, foundational science, and applications of biotechnology, encourage student and teacher interest in relevant science, technology, and careers

NBC2 mini-BIOMAN Conferences will highlight a specific area of biomanufacturing. The three-day, hands-on workshops will provide in-depth knowledge of and experience in the most cutting-edge biomanufacturing technologies. Each mini-BIOMAN Conference will encompass three days packed with hands-on laboratory activities and informative lectures. At the conclusion of the mini-BIOMAN, participants will have a comprehensive, ready-to-insert curriculum module to utilize in their own classrooms.

From his work at Washington State University in the early 1990s, to his distinguished work at The Land Institute, to serving as a Science and Technology Policy Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, to his current USAID position, he has delivered a compelling vision of a better planet to an extensive network of public, scientific, and educational leaders active in natural resource conservation.

The third annual Community College Cyber Summit (3CS) is organized and produced by six Advanced Technological Education (ATE) centers funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and involved in cybersecurity. 3CS meets the perceived need for a national academic conference that focuses exclusively on cybersecurity education at the community college level. Faculty, administrators, and other stakeholders in community college cybersecurity education are invited and encouraged to attend.

This workshop introduces participants to the SeaMATE TriggerFish ROV control system and the art of accomplishing both bi-directional motor speed control using the Sabertooth motor controller and the Arduino microcontroller. Participants are required to enroll in and complete a 30-hour online course on using the Arduino (see workshop description #1 above) before participating in the TriggerFish ROV institute.

HI-TEC is a national conference on advanced technological education where secondary and postsecondary educators, counselors, industry professionals, trade organizations, and technicians can update their knowledge and skills. Charged with Educating America’s Technical Workforce, the event focuses on the preparation needed by the existing and future workforce for companies in the high-tech sectors that drive our nation’s economy. Attendees have the option to choose from approximately 15 preconference workshops and industry site tours during the first 2 days, followed by the 2-day main conference featuring keynote speakers and 60+ breakout sessions. There will also be an awards luncheon and Technology Showcase with an exhibitor reception, door prizes, and more!

STEM educators take part in an intense five day electric guitar design/build project.  Each faculty member will build his/her own custom electric guitar and will engage in student centered learning activities that relate the guitar design to specific math, science and engineering topics.  Participants leave this weeklong experience with their custom-made guitars, curriculum modules with short term assessments that can be immediately integrated into the faculty team school curriculum.

The Challenge is a 5-day practicum based workshop where teams comprised equally of students and professionals, including automotive engineers, government engineers, and ethical “white hat” hackers, work on real cars to find real answers to the challenges posed by cybersecurity in automobiles. Teams work to identify automotive cybersecurity trends and develop talent in a new technical discipline in a high tech industry.

During this 5-day course attendees will be introduced to Fusion-CAD focused on mechanical part design; basic sketching, solid modeling and file import/export. Emphasis of the course will be on Fusion-CAM, covering tool paths and workflow.

Attendees will learn to use basic 2-D milling tool paths and apply them to both attendee created models and imported models. Tool building, post processing, set-up sheets and multiple work coordinate systems will introduced during the course. The culmination of the course will include a basic introduction surface tool paths. Throughout the week attendees will have the opportunity to set-up, fixture and run a part they programmed on a Haas CNC Mill.

This class is intended for people who have had little exposure to Fusion- CAD or Fusion-CAM. Attendees should be familiar with windows operating systems, basic file saving and using a USB flash drive. For maximum benefit from the class attendees are encouraged to have downloaded their free copy of Fusion 360 and familiarize themselves with the operating system layout before attending class. After signing up for class suggested learning assets will be sent to the attendee to use before coming to class. Course assets used during the class will be available to attendees for use at their instructional facility and the end of the class.

The Community and College Consortium for Health and Safety Training (CCCHST), administered by the Partnership for Environmental Technology Education (PETE) has training components for the EPA Hazardous Waste Worker Training Program (HWWTP) and the DOE Worker Training Program. The CCCHST HWWTP consists of 120 partners offering hazardous materials instruction (HAZWOPER and related Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 29 CFR 1910.120) in most states of the nation. CCCHST uses a curriculum developed by the Hazardous Materials Training and Research Institute (HMTRI) Davenport, Iowa through a train-the-trainer model program. CCCHST instructors, prepared by PETE and HMTRI, annually train 10,000 workers, technicians, and supervisors to protect themselves and their communities from exposure to hazardous materials encountered during waste site clean-up, disaster site cleanup, Brownfields redevelopment, in the transportation of hazardous materials, and in the response to spills and releases of hazardous materials. CCCHST membership consists of community colleges partnered with business and industry, universities, and community-based organizations offering a response to the national training need for hazardous waste workers, disaster site workers and emergency response personnel.

Tour industry worksites including nuclear flow loops, simulators, robotics, and containment laboratories.

The RCNET Institute gives educators the opportunity to tour sites typically off-limits to the general public, like nuclear reactors and containment areas, network with peers in education and the nuclear industry and contribute to a National Science Foundation (NSF) digital repository of educator and industry tools, learn to use hands-on learning modules that cover core STEM objectives through the use of emerging technologies such as 3D Scanning, Robotics, and Cyber Security, become an RCNET-certified STEM educator; earn 6 continuing education units (CEUs) from Indian River State College (IRSC); and
Earn a stipend upon successful completion of all aspects of the Institute, timely submission of replicable educational modules to the RCNET Center, and responses to RCNET Center post-Institute surveys.
