Quantifying Areas in Cultivation in Maricopa County, New Mexico

Learning Unit Description:

The Integrated Geospatial Education and Technology Training Project (iGETT) presents a series of Learning Units (LU) designed to incorporate federal land remote sensing data into Geographic Information System (GIS) instruction. The Quantifying Areas in Cultivation in Maricopa County, New Mexico LU, created by Remy Autz of Phoenix College, focuses on the use of ENVI software to extract data on cultivated land from Landsat 7 imagery through pixel reflectance values. Students also use data assess land use change related to urbanization over time. 

The iGETT Learning Units amount to about two weeks of instruction and are designed for use both as “skills-based case studies and building blocks for new courses.” All LUs are intended for students with a basic understanding of GIS. Each LU includes three core documents, an instructor’s guide, a student guide, and a curriculum support document, as well as the remote sensing data needed to complete the unit. Completion of this LU requires two weeks or eight hours of class time. The complete the unit, students must have basic competency in the use of PCs and the MS Windows operating system, as well as familiarity with MS Word, PowerPoint, and some experience or training in ENVI. 

Upon completion of the lesson, students should have a basic understanding of remote sensing, as well as being able to compare aerial photography and satellite imagery, and the use of GIS to obtain information about land use as it relates to cultivation.
