Determining Ecoroof Locations to Improve Urban Environments in Oregon

Learning Unit Description:

The Integrated Geospatial Education and Technology Training Project (iGETT) presents a series of Learning Units (LU) designed to incorporate federal land remote sensing data into Geographic Information System (GIS) instruction. The Determining Ecoroof Locations to Improve Urban Environments in Oregon LU, created by Lynn Songer of Lane Community College, examines ecoroof development in the context of remote sensing. Using real-life data, students are introduced to fundamental concepts of pixel identification, color bands, and basic image processing using ENVI: adding layers, stacking layers, and creating geographic subsets. Divided into seven parts, this lesson has students isolate urban land cover and export the classified images to ArcMap as ESRI Grid Files. Then, in ArcMap, students will reclassify the GRID file and calculate the percentage of urban and non-urban land cover.

The iGETT Learning Units amount to about two weeks of instruction and are designed for use both as “skills-based case studies and building blocks for new courses.” All LUs are intended for students with a basic understanding of GIS. Each LU includes three core documents, an instructor’s guide, a student guide, and a curriculum support document, as well as the remote sensing data needed to complete the unit. Completion of the lesson requires at least twenty-four hours in total to complete, divided between in-class and independent, open lab time. Students will need access to a computer which has ArcMap, ENVI, Adobe Illustrator (or other graphics program) Windows PowerPoint, Internet access and a browser, and the current version of Java. Students working on this lesson should already be familiar with ArcMap and be able to: open files, add data, project data on the fly, create a personal Geodatabase, create feature classes, digitize, create map layouts adding a title, labels, add GRID files, open attribute data, and summarize attributes.

Upon completion of the lesson, students will be able to open images in a remote sensing software application, create a geographic sub-set, color map a classified image, and support finding using maps and other data.
