Land Surface Heat Emissivity in Yellowstone National Park
Learning Unit Description:
The Integrated Geospatial Education and Technology Training Project (iGETT) presents a series of Learning Units (LU) designed to incorporate federal land remote sensing data into Geographic Information System (GIS) instruction. The Land Surface Heat Emissivity in Yellowstone National Park LU, created by Trent Morrell, uses Yellowstone National Park's expansive offerings--hot springs, hot pools, mud pots, fumaroles and geysers--to examine the driving force behind concentrations of hydrothermal activity. The lesson exposes students to geospatial techniques through the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing software, which helps develop their skills in spatial analysis of a geophysical phenomenon.
The iGETT Learning Units amount to about two weeks of instruction and are designed for use both as “skills-based case studies and building blocks for new courses.” All LUs are intended for students with a basic understanding of GIS. Each LU includes three core documents, an instructor’s guide, a student guide, and a curriculum support document, as well as the remote sensing data needed to complete the unit. Completion of this LU takes three to five weeks of in-class time. The lesson itself is divided into four parts: 1). Introduction of project and acquisition of data; 2). Learn more about remote sensing and image analysis; 3). Learn more about remote sensing using classification methods; and 4). Learn how to integrate remote sensing data into a GIS. Upon completion of the exercise, students will be able to: use remote sensing imagery to analyze a spatially related problem; download remotely sensed imagery from the internet; build a project using ENVI software; classify temperature values from satellite images; and produce a final map document with proper cartographic techniques.
For orientation purposes, viewers should begin with the attached Learning Unit Summary.pdf, which offers a description of the lesson, as well as an overview of topics covered, required software, and the intended audience.
Lesson Contents:
The attached files associated with this LU exist in a variety of formats and a variety of geospatial data file types.
Below is a list of the files contained within the .zip attachment. The size of each file is included in parenthesis.
