Investigating Tsunami Damage in Southeast Asia
Learning Unit Description:
The Integrated Geospatial Education and Technology Training Project (iGETT) presents a series of Learning Units (LU) designed to incorporate federal land remote sensing data into Geographic Information System (GIS) instruction. The Investigating Tsunami Damage in Southeast Asia LU, created by Scott Hood of Kennebec Valley Community College, uses data sets, remote sensing, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to assess the devastation caused by a tsunami. In this 17-part assignment, students carry out an analysis and build a model based on a specific natural disaster or environmental event. An optional independent project may be added in which students use similar methods to access the damaged caused by a different natural disaster in another location.
The iGETT Learning Units amount to about two weeks of instruction and are designed for use both as “skills-based case studies and building blocks for new courses.” All LUs are intended for students with a basic understanding of GIS. Each LU includes three core documents, an instructor’s guide, a student guide, and a curriculum support document, as well as the remote sensing data needed to complete the unit. Completion of the entire exercise should take about four hours, though instructors may choose to take more or less time to explore the provided websites and do additional research. Additionally, students may require extra time on the exercises found within the attached student handout. To complete the lesson, students must have access to a computer with Plotter, ENVI, and ArcGIS software installed.
Upon completion of the lesson, students should be able to explain topics such as remote sensing, the electromagnetic spectrum, passive remote sensing, and active remote sensing; use ENVI software; create a basic map in ArcMap using images from ENVI data sets; and analyze and explain the outcome of the exercise.
For orientation purposes, viewers should begin with Hood_Thumbnail.pdf, which offers a description of the LU as well as an overview of topics covered, required software, and the intended audience.
