Chemical Lab Safety Rules Learning Module

Module Description:

This module, from Support Center for Microsystems Education (SCME), provides information on "the general safety rules for facilities and laboratories that use chemicals, and [allows] students the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of these rules." This module is divided into the following three units: Primary Knowledge Unit, Lab Safety Activity, and LM Assessment.

Module Contents: 

This module includes five instructor guides, four participant guides, and a presentation. PDF and DOC versions are provided for all of the guides. The included guides are Chemical Lab Safety Rules Primary Knowledge (PK), an activity, a procedure checklist, and an assessment. A Learning Module Map (LM) Instructor Guide is also included. 

The LM map provides information about the module including module contents, target audience, and a map that is divided into the following three sections: Important Steps, Key Points, and Reasons. 

Chemical Lab Safety Rules Primary Knowledge (PK) is an instructional unit with the following learning objectives:

• Develop [a] safety checklist for at least one scenario related to a laboratory or manufacturing environment.
• Demonstrate your ability to follow the safety rules of your facility.

The procedure checklist can be used to rank students on their adherence to chemical lab safety rules listed in the Chemical Lab Safety Rules Assessment. The checklist includes 20 lab safety rules and the following ranking options: 0 = never, 1 = sometimes, 2 = mostly, 3 = always. Example rules include: Demonstrates an attitude of "safety first", Uses the buddy system when working with chemicals, Reads the label and MSDS before working with a specific chemical, Executes the proper procedures for accidents and emergencies, Applies the basic rules for working with chemicals (never touches exposed skin, doesn't eat or chew gum, etc.), and more. 

In the Chemical Lab Safety Rules Activity, students develop "safety checklists for two lab procedures" that include "the safety rules that must be followed in order to safely complete each procedure." Prior to this activity, students should review the Chemical Lab Safety Rules PK unit. 

Chemical Lab Safety Rules Assessment includes 20 questions as well as a list of lab safety rules and the Procedure Checklist that can be used to rank student performance according to these rules. 

A PowerPoint presentation is also provided and includes a unit overview, objectives, and additional information about chemical lab safety rules. 

For orientation purposes Saf_SafetyRules_LM_Map_Mar2017.pdf is included as a separate attachment and offers a sample of the type of material included in this module.
