This module, from Support Center for Microsystems Education (SCME), provides content and activities that allow the participants to locate safety data sheets, extract information, and compare the potential hazards of two or more chemicals. "MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) and microtechnology fabrication requires several hazardous chemicals. SDSs are available that explain the potential hazards of these chemicals and all chemicals used in a fabrication facility."
The module contains seven instructor guides, six participant guides, and a PowerPoint presentation. The guides include PDF and Word versions. The included guides are SDS Learning Module, Knowledge Probe (KP), Internet Research Activity, KOH (Potassium Hydroxide) SDS Activity, KOH SDS Activity Assessment, and Final Assessment. Instructional guides include additional content such as instructor notes as well as questions and answers. A Learning Module Map (LM) Instructor Guide is also included.
The LM provides information about the module including module contents, target audience, and a map that is divided into the following three sections: Important Steps, Key Points, and Reasons.
The Knowledge Probe is intended to be a pre-test to assess the participants' knowledge of purpose and content of Safety Data Sheets. Ten questions are included.
The SDS Learning Module is an instructional unit that "provides the basic information on the content of Safety Data Sheets. The following sections are included: Introduction, Learning Module Objectives, Dependencies, SDS Requirements, SDS Terminology, Chemical Information / Composition / Exposure Controls, Classification and Mixture, Physical Data, Fire and Explosion Hazard Data / Fire-Fighting Measure, and more.
The PowerPoint presentation includes a unit overview, learning module objectives, an introduction, and covers the following topics: What is a SDS, availability requirement, OSHA requirements, When should you review a SDS, SDS Terminology, requirements of a SDS, product identification, and more. A PDF version of the presentation is also included.
Two activities are included in the module. The SDS Internet Research Activity has participants "locate specific Safety Data Sheets that are relevant to microsystems fabrication." The second activity "allows you to learn more about KOH (Potassium Hydroxide), a chemical used in the fabrication of MEMS."
The KOH SDS Activity Assessment "tests the learner's knowledge and skill on extracting and interpreting the information on a KOH Safety Data Sheets." This assessment includes ten questions and is intended to be used as a post-test after the KOH activity.
The Final Assessment includes 12 questions and is intended to test the learner after the primary knowledge unit and activity.
For orientation purposes the 'Saf_MSDS_LM_Map' is included as a separate attachment and offers a sample of the type of material included in this module.
