This activity, from The Advanced Technology Environmental and Energy Center (ATEEC), uses Google Earth to take students on a virtual field trip to the Alyeska Marine Terminal in Valdez, Alaska, exploring the different aspects of oil transfer. The tour features points of interest that link to pictures and videos explaining parts of oil transfer. Included in the 2-page teacher's guide are class questions, recommended usage systems requirements for the activity, and objectives for the assignment. The objectives are as follows:

  • Students will visualize the setting of the Alyeska Marine Terminal.
  • Students will explore the security issues of the marine terminal.
  • Students evaluate the environmental concerns of the marine terminal.
  • Students will consider the movement of oil from the Alyeska pipeline to refineries on the west coast.

Also included is a .kmz file, which contains the virtual tour. The .kmz file can be imported into Google Earth by clicking "File" on the top left, followed by "Import KML / KMZ file."
