In this lesson from the MAPS GIS program at Lane Community College, students examine global spatial patterns of human development using a web-based GIS map. Using the HDI (Human Development Index) layer, students can identify demographic patterns of population and development and hypothesize reasons for variation. In order to make comparisons between countries, students will complete a table of demographic data. Prior to starting this lesson, students must be able to turn layers on and off, use the ID tool, zoom, toggle from layers to legend, and perform a search (Boolean) query. A link of the web-based GIS map, as well as downloadable student lesson and answer sheets and a teacher guide are available.
