This Data Acquisition and Management course, from the National Information, Security & Geospatial Technologies Consortium, is part of a series of model courses on GIS, spatial technologies, and related subjects to provide students with the professional skills necessary to succeed in geospatial technology careers. This course introduces students to the fundamentals of data creation and formatting in GIS using a series of lectures, readings, quizzes, examinations, and labs. The course focuses on “fundamental concepts of primary GIS data creation and discusses quantitative techniques for collection, classification, and management of geographical data.” The ArcGIS Desktop 10.1 software is required for this course.

Course Information:

The Data Acquisition and Management course can be implemented either as a stand-alone instructional unit or as a course in a geospatial program. The course is arranged into seven modules with associated learning objectives and related assignments. The modules include: Reviewing the Basics of Geospatial Data, Basic Database Design, Database Schema Implementation, Vector Data Structure, Spatial Data Quality, Raster Data Structure, and Data Sources.

Upon completion of the course, students will have an understanding of the collection, conversion, and constructing of spatial data; the ability to collect, create, process, and utilize spatial data; and understanding of the similarities and differences between data models and formats; and the basics of GIS data storage and interoperability.
