Description:

This Spatial Analysis course, from the National Information, Security & Geospatial Technologies Consortium, is part of a series of model courses on GIS, spatial technologies, and related subjects to provide students with the professional skills necessary to succeed in geospatial technology careers. This course will teach students problem-solving and decision making skills applicable to a wide range of courses of study. Through lectures, readings, activities, and labs, student will learn geospatial analysis techniques that can be applied to data analysis in various disciplines. ArcGIS Desktop 10.1 software is required for this course.

Course Information:

The Spatial Analysis course can be implemented either as a stand-alone instructional unit or as an entry-level course in a geospatial program. This course is composed of eight modules each with a lesson plan and lab including all necessary lab files. These modules include: Introduction to Geospatial Analysis; Raster Data Analysis – Density Surfaces; Raster Data Analysis – Working with Topographic Data; Reviewing the Basics of Geospatial Data; Using Attribute and Spatial Queries for Data Exploration; Vector Data Analysis – Creating a Site Selection Model; Vector Data Analysis – Network Analysis; and Vector Data Analysis – Overlay Techniques.

After completing the course, students will be able to prepare data for use in analysis, determine an appropriate approach to solving a problem using geospatial tools, run geoprocessing tools individually in sequence, organize the data sets resulting from analysis, and present the results using appropriate terminology and visualizations.
