Description:

This Introduction to Geospatial Technology course, from the National Information, Security & Geospatial Technologies Consortium, is part of a series of model courses on GIS, spatial technologies, and related subjects to provide students with the professional skills necessary to succeed in geospatial technology careers. This course is intended to give students an understanding to “the fundamentals of Geospatial Technology, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), cartography, remote sensing, and spatial analysis” through a series of lectures, readings, application papers, quizzes, examinations, and labs. The ArcGIS Desktop 10.1 software is required for this course.

Course Information:

The Introduction to Geospatial Technology course can be implemented either as a stand-alone course for use by any discipline interested in an introduction to Geospatial Technology, or as an entry-level course in a geospatial program. The course is composed of eight modules: What are Geographic Information Systems; Spatial Data Models; Understanding Coordinate Systems; Displaying Geospatial Data; Creating Geospatial Data; Understanding Remote Sensing and Aerial Photography; and Basic Geospatial Analysis Techniques.

Upon completion of the course, students will have an understanding of the basic concepts of Geographic Information Science and Technology, as well as proficiency with the basics of geospatial software, map creation and design, and the creation and acquisition of spatial data.

All of the course materials are contained in four zip files: Course Development Documents, Course Download, Lab Materials, and Lab Data, as well as a Syllabus. New viewers should begin by viewing Syllabus.pdf and move on to the Course Development Documents.zip file.

Course Contents:
