This lecture, presented by John Chamberlain, covers the basics of mathematics in phonetics education. In 22 minutes, Chamberlain presents the basics of mathematics in phonetics education - scientific notation, prefixes, writing large and small numbers, and more. Once the basics have been explained, Chamberlain introduces students to topics such as Engineering Notation (in which exponents are always multiples of 3) and Using a Scientific Calculator. All examples introduced by Chamberlain help students complete one of five exercises at the end of the lecture, in which students can practice changing large and small numbers to scientific notation, changing large numbers in power-of-ten notation to decimal notation, completing prefixes to power-of-ten notation, and using a scientific calculator with power-of-ten notation. Upon watching the lecture, students should be able to write decimal numbers in scientific notation and write scientifically notated numbers in decimal notation.
